Half of IRS-themed lures arrived as voice calls and about six in ten romance approaches began on social media over the same window, so a program that only tests email is scoring one surface out of several.

The channel is doing part of the persuasion. Malwarebytes' own reading is that the platform tends to match the content: job lures land in email because that is where work correspondence lives, and romance approaches land on social media because meeting a stranger there is unremarkable [6]. Format also sets the tempo. A direct message reads as personal, while a phone call demands an answer while the target is still on the line [7].
Two grades of data sit in the same writeup and should not carry the same weight. The channel splits and the timing curves come from Malwarebytes' research systems [1]. The brand ranking comes from what users reported [12], and the gaming loss figure from its Scam Guard product [16]. Reported rankings measure what people noticed and bothered to flag. The published list of the five most impersonated brands names four: Microsoft, Apple, Roblox and Amazon [12], with Google described separately as abused at least twice as often as Amazon [13]. Roblox turns up again among the most impersonated gaming sites, with a 15% rise in scam activity from mid-June to mid-July [17].
The arithmetic on the timing claim: the 1:00 am ET low is the baseline, and 874% busier puts noon at 974% of it, roughly 9.7 times the volume [19]. At the stated blocking rate of about 500,000 phishing sites a day [9], the April 15 to July 14 window runs 91 days [18] and multiplies out to something near 45.5 million blocks [20]. That is a rate extended across the period rather than a count of distinct domains, and it covers the web surface only [8].
The usable finding is that the pretext predicts the channel across more than 20 measured scam types [5], which makes channel a control question rather than an awareness slogan. A mail gateway plus a quarterly email test will see toll notices, since nine in ten arrive by email or text [2]. It will not see the phone call carrying half of IRS scams [3]. It will not see the fake giveaway that appears in a feed instead of an inbox [10], nor the opening move in the six in ten romance scams that begin on social media [4]. Impersonation is concentrated enough to plan detection around: one face, MrBeast, accounts for about 30% of impersonation scams, ahead of Elon Musk and Donald Trump [11].
This is consumer telemetry, and the read across to staff is inference rather than measurement. The bridge is the handset, because the phone that takes the toll text also takes the helpdesk callback. The cheap correction is intake. A report-phish button counts email and nothing else, so a low click rate is as easily an unmeasured channel as a trained workforce.
Ranked by verification strength, evidence, and original report placement.
Malwarebytes says the findings come from its own threat research systems and draw on global data collected between April 15 and July 14, 2026.
Malwarebytes measured more than 20 different types of scams, from tech support and refund scams to sextortion and scareware, and found each one favors a specific platform.
The platforms favored often match the content of a scam: job scams mostly arrive through email, romance scams mostly through social media, and tech support scams mostly through the phone.
Scams reach people through the web more than any other platform, followed by email and SMS.
Malwarebytes blocks around 500,000 phishing websites a day.
A fake giveaway scam is far more likely to arrive via a social media feed than by email or text.

Evidence, demonstrated adoption, hype gap, incentives, and confidence are assessed independently, each on its own current evidence. How these are measured.
One vendor's console, no second reading
Malwarebytes both collected and published all of this, and it publishes ratios without the counts beneath them — no sample size for the 20-plus scam types, no base for the Roblox and Steam spikes, no country split behind a dataset called global whose peak hour is quoted in Eastern time. The brand ranking is the tell: five promised, four printed, and Google described as outranking Amazon while sitting outside the list. The channel shapes are plausible and internally consistent; the digits have never been checked by anyone but the issuer.
Nothing yet outside the vendor's own numbers
We can see Malwarebytes' footprint — a research release and a half-million daily site blocks — but a footprint is not uptake. Nothing in this reporting shows a security team, platform, or regulator changing a phishing program, a moderation rule, or an advisory because of the channel split, and we will not invent that trail.
Big multiples, hedged conclusions
The overstatement is presentational rather than substantive. An 874% lift sounds like a different kind of finding than 'noon is about ten times quieter-hour volume', and the gaming line reads as loss when it actually says potential exposure of $1,000 or more. Against that, Malwarebytes declines the easy causal story on Friday timing and says outright that its data does not explain why — restraint that keeps the gap modest rather than large.
Research that ends in a product list
The half-million-a-day blocking figure doubles as a capability boast, the gaming severity number is sourced to Scam Guard, and the closing advice names Browser Guard and Mobile Security. That does not make the telemetry wrong — Malwarebytes is one of the few parties who can see cross-channel scam volume at all — but the surfaces it sells into are the surfaces it measures, and no independent voice appears anywhere in our coverage to price that in.
Trust the shape, not the digits
The directional claim — scam type predicts delivery channel, and email-only defence covers part of the field — is the kind of thing one vendor's install base can genuinely see, and it holds together across twenty-plus categories. Individual figures deserve less weight: unaudited, undenominated, arithmetically loose in the brand ranking, and never restated by anyone else.
