Divide the two headline figures and you get a mean of roughly 340 hectares per large fire [17], an average that conceals everything interesting about the distribution. A few very large burns and a long tail of merely large ones give the same mean, and only one of those shapes strains a suppression system. The same caution applies to the other big count here. The 1,132 wildfires attended by fire and rescue services in England and Wales [6] are incident responses, not the European Commission's class of large fire [2]. They cannot be added to 1,913, and they carry no burned area with them.
Working backwards from "almost double the long-term average" [3] puts that baseline somewhere around 330,000 hectares [18], and this year's total is about two-thirds of the more than one million hectares that burned in 2025 [19], which remains the record year [5]. The American comparison in the same account, 163 per cent of the 10-year average [4], rests on a ten-year baseline rather than a long-term one, so the two multipliers answer different questions and should not be stacked into a single severity ranking.
The physical setup was legible in advance. An unusually wet winter grew grasslands, shrublands and forest understories; the weather turned abruptly in May, with heatwaves in quick succession and very little rain, drying the ground into a flash drought at continental scale and leaving high winds to do the rest [11]. Francesca Di Giuseppe at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts told New Scientist that the notable feature of the season was not the total area burned but how quickly conditions developed and how geographically widespread the danger became [9]. That is a concurrency argument, and it measures something different from area burned. Her framing, that with 30 per cent of Europe fire-prone something will ignite somewhere and extreme conditions will make it very hard to suppress [10], describes a demand curve on shared aircraft and crews: a strain on capacity, and a separate quantity from a hectare count.
On causation, note the exact wording. Maik Billing at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research says the increasing frequency of hot, dry and windy conditions is consistent with the broader trend expected under climate change [14]. That statement establishes trend consistency for the broader pattern; attributing this particular summer's fires would take a separate study. The measured long-run number is southern: fire-prone summer days across southern Europe have more than doubled since 1981 [13]. Europe is among the fastest-warming regions of the world [16], but the 1981-based series in this account covers the south only; the north, where the new burns are, still lacks that baseline.
That gap is the operational problem. Alexander Held at the European Forest Institute points out that Ireland and Wales can take 2,000 millimetres of rain in a good year, and those landscapes are now burning [15]. Wopke Hoekstra, the European commissioner for climate, net zero and clean growth, wrote on LinkedIn at the end of August that the fires had reached new corners of the continent [12]. Germany, Portugal and Italy saw fierce blazes alongside the UK and Belgium [20]. Fuel management and crew training are slow to build. The season that needs them is already annual.

Official tallies, one relay
The spine of the story is credible and thin at the same time: the hectares and the 1,913 large fires come from the European Commission, and the interpretation comes from named people at ECMWF, the Potsdam Institute and the European Forest Institute. But it all reaches us through one New Scientist article, the tally has no stated cut-off date or large-fire definition, 'long-term average' is never anchored to a baseline period, and the US 163 per cent figure arrives with no source attached at all.

Argues down its own headline number
Most fire-season copy reaches for the biggest available figure; this piece talks itself out of one, saying 2026 does not come close to 2025's million-plus hectares, and then lets Di Giuseppe say the total area is not the interesting part. What remains under-pressed is the sharpest fact in the story — a rain-defined country blowing past a record wildfire year and fire nearing a nuclear site — which is delivered as an example rather than as the lede it could have been.
Severity suits everyone quoted
Nobody in this story is served by a quiet fire season. The climate commissioner's LinkedIn post about fires reaching 'new corners of our continent' is a policy argument as much as an observation, and the expert voices sit at institutions — a forecasting centre, a climate institute, a forest institute — whose mandates and funding track exactly the risk they describe. None of that makes the numbers wrong, but the Commission is both the source of the tally and a beneficiary of how the tally reads, and no independent count exists here to check it against.
Firm on the shift, soft on the sums
Two different confidence levels are tangled here. That fire moved north and west this year, that England and Wales are past a record, and that the wet-winter-then-flash-drought sequence explains it — these are consistent, attributed and internally coherent. The precise magnitudes are not: the arithmetic checks out only against numbers whose vintage and definitions are unstated, and one outlet carries all of them.
