Pandora's October price rise puts its cheapest plan level with rivals' student rates

Pandora is raising paid plans by at least $1 a month, with Plus at $5.99 and Premium at $11.99 for current subscribers from October 22. Pandora ties the rise only to investment in recommendations and reliability, while the bill still depends on which store a subscriber pays through.

What happened

  • New subscribers have been charged the higher Pandora prices since September 22, 2026.
  • The increase comes months after Spotify, which Engadget calls one of Pandora's fiercest competitors, raised its own prices.
  • Premium Family, which covers up to six family members, now costs $19.99 a month or $219.89 a year.
  • Current subscribers can switch to any of Pandora's three tiers before their next billing cycle begins.

Why it matters

  • cost Apple-billed Premium subscribers pay $4 a month more than Roku customers for the same plan, a channel gap four times the minimum increase.
  • decision Paying a year up front directly saves a month, yet a Plus listener still spends $6.01 less a year on Roku's monthly bill, so the cheapest route to Plus runs through a third-party store.
  • constraint At $11.99, Premium has to justify near-rival pricing on curation alone, since Engadget found it behind competitors on features and audio quality.

A Pandora Plus subscriber who wants to know what October's bill will say has two places to look: the September email, or the profile icon in the app, then Settings, then Subscription [14]. The figure there depends on who does the billing. Paid directly, Plus is $5.99 a month [3]. Through Apple or Google Play it is $6.99 [6][7]. On the Amazon Appstore it stays at $4.99, according to Engadget [8], and Roku sells Plus at $4.99 and Premium at $10.99 [9].

Premium through Apple costs $14.99 [6]. That is $3, or about 25%, above Pandora's own $11.99 [2]. Google Play charges $12.99 for the same plan [7].

Pandora prices every annual plan at exactly 11 months of the monthly rate: $65.89 for Plus, $131.89 for Premium and $219.89 for Premium Family [3]. A direct subscriber who commits for a year gets one month back. Engadget reports that select annual, Premium and Premium Family subscriptions are unavailable through Amazon and Roku [10].

Pandora wrote on its support page: "We're making this update so we can continue investing in the personalized listening experience Pandora is known for, including better recommendations, improved reliability, and access to the music and podcasts you love." [15] The company also told subscribers "we haven't made this decision lightly." [16] Engadget called the logic behind the new billing structure "somewhat unclear." [17]

By Engadget's account, the announcement drew surprise and outrage from many of Pandora's millions of paid subscribers [18]. Engadget's report quotes only Pandora's explanation and includes no cancellation figures. It cannot show whether streamers' stated reasons are getting vaguer over time, or whether this one will cost Pandora subscribers.

The price position is better documented. Engadget wrote that Pandora listeners had "enjoyed relatively cheap subscription costs" until now [19], and it put Pandora on "a long list of streamers that have increased rates this year." [23] Plus now costs the same as Spotify's and Apple's discounted student plans [20].

Anyone who cancels a paid plan drops to Pandora Free, which keeps personalized stations, podcasts and ad-supported unlimited skips [22]. For an operator drafting a price notice of their own, I'd sort it on two axes. One is whether the stated reason names something a user can find in the product today. The other is whether a cheaper tier exists for the people the new price pushes out. Pandora sits in the vague-reason, open-exit box: its support staff cannot point to a feature the extra dollar bought, but they can move a Premium subscriber to Plus or a Plus subscriber to Free [13][22]. The worst box is a vague reason with no cheaper tier, where cancellation is the only answer support can give. A Pandora subscriber can run a narrower version of the same test. Free still has the stations, and of the prices Engadget lists, on-demand Premium is cheapest on Roku at $10.99 [5].

What to watch

  • Whether Pandora reports subscriber numbers after the October 22 billing cycle that show if the outrage turned into cancellations or downgrades to Free.
  • Whether Amazon Appstore and Roku prices rise to match the new direct rates, or Apple and Google Play prices move again.
  • Whether Pandora ships specific recommendation or reliability changes it ties to the increase.
