Human characters fail in a predictable order. Brains are very good at spotting when another human looks wrong, and unnatural lighting, shadow, skin or clothing is usually what gives a game away [13]. DLSS 5 attacks exactly that layer: AI models applied to the rendered scene, with a hard rule that structural geometry is never altered [2][6]. Animation is authored upstream of the frame, so nothing in the DLSS 5 control set reaches it [6][7]. Which is why PCWorld's reviewer went from staring at the shadows on Tyrese Haliburton's hand to staring at a player moving awkwardly in a cutscene [3][4].
Teams tell themselves players notice fidelity, measured in comparison screenshots at 400 percent zoom. Players actually stop watching the court and start watching the one thing that reads as fake. When the tuned on-court action can pass for NBA League Pass footage [15], the fake thing is no longer the jersey.
The budget arithmetic is the useful part. Nvidia says an effectively unlimited number of masks is available, targeting single objects or whole classes such as foliage or food, tunable per object and per scene [7], and that adding masks does not inherently raise the performance penalty [8]. So masks are close to free at runtime and expensive in labour, because somebody has to author and review each one. The frame cost sits in the base technology: roughly 50 to 60 percent, depending on game, scene and resolution [9]. Landing back at your original frame rate therefore takes 2x headroom at the low end of that range and 2.5x at the high end [14], which is what Super Resolution is for, since it renders fewer pixels internally and reconstructs the image larger [12].
Read that together and the studio's constraint changes shape. Rendering realism is now purchasable: integrate, mask, tune, and pay for it in internal resolution. Animation quality costs something else entirely. It is capture days, review passes, and someone with authority over cutscene timing.
The forcing function for anyone about to sign off on a DLSS 5 integration is a two-column list. First column: can a post-process model touch this asset at all? Second column: will a player name this asset once everything around it improves? Lighting, sweat and cloth contact answer yes to column one, which is why they get fixed by the integration. Walk cycles, hand-offs and cutscene blocking answer no to column one and yes to column two. That intersection is the only cell that needs new money. It is where the fidelity ceiling now lives.
The rollout carries two risks. The modder ports circulating from the early-access build are not evidence of what a tuned integration looks like, per PCWorld, even where they look good [10], and they carry the same frame rate hit [11]. And a mask is a decision with an owner: choosing to push scenery hard while leaving character designs closer to the artists' intent [7] is a taste call that will be relitigated by anyone who reads a forum thread.
For NBA 2K27, on the evidence of one preview [1], the list of things that still look wrong starts with the cutscene. That list belongs to the animation lead now, and it arrived without a corresponding line in the animation budget.

One hands-on, every number borrowed
The sensory detail is genuinely first-hand — a reviewer who watched shadows move across a player's hand and then watched that same player walk wrong — but every quantity in the story belongs to Nvidia: the 50-to-60 percent cost, the 797fps headline, the claim that mask count is free. PCWorld says so itself and hands readers a few pinches of salt instead of a benchmark table. The only check that did not come from the vendor came from modders porting the files out of an early-access build.
One launch title and a weekend of mods
Tally what actually exists: an early-access build of one basketball game, a public launch three days out, and support fenced to RTX 50-series cards. Everything else circulating is unsanctioned — modders shoving the extracted files into other titles, which PCWorld is careful to say shows nothing about what tuned integration looks like. That is a debut, not a footprint.
Vendor gloss, with the bill printed
"You could mistake it for League Pass" is the sentence a briefing is engineered to produce, and it rests on one viewing of one tuned demo. What keeps the gap narrow is that the same writer prints the cost in the next section, needles Nvidia's 1080p 5090 figure as laughable, and builds the whole piece around the flaw the technology exposes rather than the fidelity it delivers. The overstatement lives in the adjectives, not the caveats.
Nvidia set the room
Nvidia convened the preview, picked the build, supplied the on/off comparison shots readers are told to zoom into, supplied every performance chart, and sells the only hardware that runs the feature. PCWorld's register is warm — "consider that a hell of a compliment, Nvidia" — yet it is the same writer who flags that these are not PCWorld's benchmarks. Sponsored access with the disclosure attached, which is better than sponsored access without one.
Firm on what was said, thin on what holds
We can be confident about what happened in the briefing and what Nvidia asserted; we cannot yet say whether the fidelity survives contact with a shipped game or whether the frame-rate math holds outside vendor-chosen scenes. One publisher, one session, no second account. And the most interesting claim in the story — that animation is now the visible defect — is an observation nobody has tried to measure.
