Apple's first 2nm iPhone chip reportedly uses base N2 as rivals eye more advanced node

The A20 Pro's 2nm debut comes with its Arizona volume unnamed and its node a step behind what Qualcomm and MediaTek are expected to use, while the one cost Apple has actually priced into the sticker is memory.

What happened

Why it matters

A 12GB LPDDR5X module cost $30 early last year and around $70 early this year, according to Financial News [16], a move of roughly $40 a module, or 133 per cent [1], and it is the only input in this launch with a public price history. Apple's answer was $100 on the starting prices of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, taking them to $1,199 and $1,299, which Reuters attributes to rising memory costs [12]. So the sticker moved by about two and a half times the module quote anyone can see [2], and while a module quote is not Apple's contract price (nobody publishes that), the pass-through works out at about 9 per cent on a $1,099 base [3].

The Duo carries the same cost in a different shape. It starts at $1,999, roughly $100 above Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 and Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold at comparable base capacities, with up to 2TB of storage against a 1TB ceiling on either rival [13], and a reported 12GB of RAM against the up to 16GB in Samsung's folding line, a capacity Apple has not officially disclosed [14]. Doubling NAND is the cheap way to look generous; DRAM is the line actually under pressure, because memory makers are steering capacity to HBM for data centres [16], so the specification Apple leads on is the one that costs least to lead on. Apple also widened its memory sourcing beyond Samsung to SK hynix and Kioxia [15].

On silicon, TSMC's 2nm output currently sits in Taiwan, and the Arizona commitment covers "some iPhone chips" with no share and no start date attached, per CNBC [3]. Apple did not name the node either, and NoteBookCheck reports the A20 Pro is expected on base N2 while Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro go to the more advanced N2P [4]. Apple's first 2nm part was the M6 in August [5], so this is a second product loaded onto base N2 capacity, and the headline gains (a seven-core GPU up 40 per cent generationally, memory bandwidth up 50 per cent) [7] land on the node that is available rather than the node that is newest. The Qualcomm exit is unfinished on the same page: Apple's specifications list the C2 for the iPhone 18 Pro and name no modem for the US Pro Max, which MacRumors reads as possibly a supply constraint, given the C2 also powers the Duo [10][11].

This launch prices memory and defers geography, a contestable reading. The counter-thesis is decent, that an Arizona commitment is worth more as tariff and political insurance than as a wafer count, and that Apple would take base N2 volume over N2P refinement precisely because insurance needs volume [3][4]. What separates the two readings is what happens to the $100 when memory rolls over out of the upcycle TrendForce dates to the second half of 2025 [17], since a company absorbing the cycle would hold price steady on the way up, while a company that repriced would keep the increase in place on the way down.

What to watch

  • A named N2 start date, or a share of A-series output, attached to TSMC's Arizona fabs.
  • LPDDR5X module quotes: a break in the upcycle TrendForce dates to the second half of 2025 tests whether the $100 was cost or margin.
  • Teardowns and carrier listings for the US iPhone 18 Pro Max modem, which would show whether the C2 ramp is capacity-limited.
