Apple charges up to 1.6 million won more than Samsung's top foldable for a 2.8 per cent chip lead

Apple's first foldable leads the Galaxy Z Fold8 by 102 Geekbench points and costs up to 1.6 million won more than Samsung's Ultra, a premium industry analysts attribute partly to memory supply disruption.

What happened

  • Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, the first foldable in its iPhone line, at its Cupertino headquarters on the 9th, built around the A20 Pro, its first 2-nanometer-class application processor.
  • Korean retail prices run from 3.29 million won to 5.09 million won, roughly 1 million to 2 million won above the Galaxy Z Fold8 and 700,000 to 1.6 million won above the Fold8 Ultra.
  • The Duo weighs 254 grams at 5.2 millimetres thick, against 201 grams and 4.5 millimetres for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and 215 grams and 4.1 millimetres for the Fold8 Ultra.

Why it matters

  • cost If memory supply disruption and assembly bottlenecks are inside the price, the buyer is funding a component shortage rather than a brand premium, and Apple gains room to cut the moment supply eases.
  • constraint A closed agent surface caps what the highest-priced foldable can sell: one assistant stack that brokers Gemini and ChatGPT, while the cheaper Samsung device carries three agents and is adding more.
  • exposure Two regulators now sit between Apple and its own shipment plan, since the AI feature set the price rests on cannot ship in Europe or China until DMA compliance and Chinese approval land.
  • contradiction Seoul Economic Daily reads price and thin AI as leaving Samsung's crown untouched, while Counterpoint's 25 per cent implies a first-year runner-up within a couple of million units of the leader.

The 2-nanometer A20 Pro converts to more than 3,800 Geekbench single-core points against 3,698 for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 inside the Galaxy Z Fold8 [3], which is 102 points, or 2.8 per cent [4], and that 2.8 per cent is a marginal lead, decisive on a spec sheet but unlikely to move buyers at the till. The number that will decide this launch is the one Apple's supply chain set: 5.09 million won at the top of the Korean range, against 3.29 million at the bottom [5].

Industry analysts quoted by Seoul Economic Daily put part of that above Apple's usual premium policy, attributing it to memory supply disruptions and bottlenecks in assembling key components [8]. That distinction is the whole story of the segment, because a premium charged because the brand can is margin, while a premium charged because DRAM got expensive is a pass-through that evaporates when supply loosens. Apple's leading feature, 2 terabytes of storage for large AI data sets, twice the Fold8 [19], is also the same line item driving the inflated cost.

On units the arithmetic is friendlier than the framing. Apple is targeting 8 million a year [9] and Counterpoint Research expects it to take 25 per cent of foldables immediately, second to Samsung's 32 per cent [10]. Take those two together and the implied market is 32 million units, Samsung's share is 10.24 million, and the first-year gap is 2.24 million units [11] - though the 8 million is an annual target and the 25 per cent is a calendar-year forecast off a launch on the 9th [1], so treat 32 million as the ceiling and scale Samsung's number down with it. Entering a category at a quarter of it counts as a foothold.

What Apple is conceding sits above the hardware. Samsung ships the Fold8 with Bixby, Gemini and Perplexity, and is still adding partners [15]; Apple keeps a closed surface where Siri can call Gemini and ChatGPT through deals with Google and OpenAI but a user cannot run another company's agent directly [14]. Then geography: Siri AI's timing in Europe and China, the largest markets outside the United States, is unclear, with Digital Markets Act requirements on equal agent access unresolved in Europe [12] and a separate China build combining Alibaba and Baidu models still awaiting regulatory approval [13]. Eight million units a year have to land somewhere, and two of the three places they could land do not yet have the AI story the price is charging for.

The physical gap is wider than it is usually filed under. The comparison is described as roughly 10 to 20 per cent heavier and thicker [16], but 254 grams against the Fold8's 201 is 53 grams, or 26.4 per cent, and 5.2 millimetres against the Fold8 Ultra's 4.1 is 26.8 per cent [17], a gap that reflects Samsung's seven-year head start in component optimisation [18]. Samsung's response to the launch is more agents: One UI 9.5 is being accelerated to support Gemini 4, which Google plans to show late this year [21].

So the view, held loosely because Counterpoint's 25 per cent is a forecast and not a shipment: the ultra-premium tier is being bought into rather than handed over, and the exposure is regulatory timing rather than silicon. The counter-thesis is the one Seoul Economic Daily itself argues, that price above 5 million won and limited AI support leave Samsung's crown intact [22]; if actual first-year share comes in nearer 10 per cent, the price did that, and memory costs will have written Apple's market share for it.

What to watch

  • Whether Apple resolves DMA equal-access requirements and names a European ship date for Siri AI.
  • Chinese regulatory approval of the Alibaba and Baidu Siri build, which gates the second-largest market for the 8 million unit target.
  • Whether the Korean price falls once memory supply loosens, which would confirm the premium was cost rather than margin.
