Muse topped the App Store on about half of ChatGPT's debut download pace

Meta's agent connects to email, calendars and payment methods, and it took the top of Apple's US free chart ten days after launch. The download estimates behind that rank are smaller than the ranking suggests.

What happened

  • Meta's Muse reached No. 1 on Apple's US free iPhone chart on September 18, ten days after its September 8 launch, ahead of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Instagram.
  • Sensor Tower counted more than 730,000 US downloads for Muse after launch, against 707,000 for the Meta AI app during its first five days.
  • In an Oppenheimer & Co. survey of 1,500 US consumers, 8% said they would trust Meta with their passwords, against 30% for Google, 23% for Apple and 16% for ChatGPT.
  • Meta released a free Mac version on September 17 that can work with files, messages, calendars, notes and mail inside their native apps.
  • The free tier allows roughly 100 million Muse tokens a week, and the paid plans cost $20 and $100 a month in the iOS app against $16 and $80 on the web for identical allowances.

Why it matters

  • exposure The desktop build installs from the web and so never enters the chart the ranking rests on. No public number counts the laptops running an agent with local mail access.
  • constraint Anyone valuing Meta's agent push is working from a download curve, because the chart does not show retention or paid conversion.
  • contradiction Installs and stated trust are moving in opposite directions: the app ranks first in the US while Meta places last of the four named companies on password trust.
  • decision Meta has not chosen how Muse earns and is weighing a cut of purchases made through the agent, so a merchant deciding whether to let it transact is negotiating terms that do not exist yet.

The rank and the download estimates support different conclusions. Sensor Tower's earlier count put Muse at roughly 83,000 US iOS downloads in its first two days, about 41,000 a day [4]. ChatGPT averaged around 83,300 daily downloads in its debut week [5]. Muse reached the top of the chart on roughly half that daily pace [6]. implicator.ai reported that the two estimates cover different windows and are not directly comparable, and that the free chart measures download momentum [7].

Meta's own launches set the more useful baseline. Threads drew 4.3 million downloads on its first day; the Meta AI app drew 108,000 [8]. Both were promoted to Instagram's existing users. Muse launched on September 8 as a standalone brand through iOS, Android, muse.ai and WhatsApp [9].

The trust figures describe a population that mostly refuses agents outright. Oppenheimer & Co. found that 58% of its 1,500 respondents would not share passwords with any AI agent [11]. Among the 42% who might, Meta's share of stated trust works out to about one in five [12]. Visa's Earning Trust Report found that 23% of consumers trusted generative AI for payments and that 60% would not let AI handle money without human oversight [13]. Muse arrived less than two weeks after Meta agreed in August 2026 to a multistate settlement over social media harms reported at up to $18 billion [15].

What the agent does with that access is the part early users are publishing. Entrepreneur Joe Devoy wrote on X: "Yesterday I uploaded my auto insurance policy to Meta @Muse and asked for a better rate with identical coverage. In ~5 minutes, it found a policy saving me $3,500 /year, bought it, and canceled my old one." [23] Meta says Muse isolates each user's work in a dedicated virtual machine and requires approval before sensitive actions [14]. Another user, Brett Gordon, said Muse could see only the first frame of a workout video he had saved on Instagram, the app Meta owns [24].

The paid tiers cost 25% more inside the iOS app than on the web for the same token allowances, and Meta has not explained the difference [17][18]. "For the vast majority of users, they should be able to do what they need to within the free tier," said chief AI officer Alexandr Wang [19].

For anyone responsible for company laptops, the desktop build is the release that counts. It works with files, messages, calendars, notes and mail inside their native apps [16]. That leaves two options this quarter: block the install and give up whatever staff get from the free tier, or allow it and re-inventory which credentials an agent now holds on behalf of an employee [2]. Neither account describes an employer or a regulator acting on Muse during its first ten days.

What to watch

  • An active-user or paid-conversion figure for Muse's first month, from Meta or from Sensor Tower.
  • Whether retailers such as Amazon move to restrict agent traffic that would reduce their sites to fulfillment.
  • Whether Instinct, still invitation-only, opens up after matching Muse's business-calling feature in the same week.
