A breakeven count is a claim about behaviour rather than a claim about materials. The Environment Agency's 173 reuses for a conventional cotton bag [5] is, at one shopping trip a week, more than three years of carrying the same bag [2]. The ceramic mug's 1,000 uses [7] is about four years at one cup per working day [3]. So when a team writes a reusables policy and books an environmental saving against it, the saving is contingent on a usage pattern that procurement never observes and facilities rarely measures.
The arithmetic also shows how much these ratios move with assumptions. Dividing the cotton bag's 1,725 megajoules by the plastic bag's 0.6 [3] [4] gives about 2,875 times, not the 3,050 the essay states, a gap of roughly 6 percent [1]. At three orders of magnitude the direction is not in dispute, but the number that governs a policy is the agency breakeven, not the headline multiple. The straw case behaves the same way: 150 reuses to break even on a fifty-fold mass difference implies steel costs about three times as much energy per gram as plastic [4], and that count is calculated before anyone washes it [6].
A skeptic on a sustainability committee would say energy is the wrong axis, because the case for banning single-use rests on litter, marine plastic, and the aftercare a closed landfill needs for decades. That objection is not answered by the material here, which measures energy and resource demand. It is worth being exact about what the supplied text does carry: the reuse comparisons are quantified and attributed to public agencies in Britain and Denmark [5] [8], while the proposition that landfill itself is sustainable appears as one of the two halves of the anti-landfill case the author declares false [2], without the engineering detail in the section supplied. On that record, sorting by material is defensible and adopting the headline verdict is not.
The sorting has a clear near-term shape. Scrap markets, not waste policy

The title outruns the arithmetic
"What if everything we know about recycling is wrong" promises a verdict on landfill. What the piece delivers is a decent, largely checkable case that durable substitutes carry long payback periods — a narrower claim. The landfill half, what a properly run modern cell actually emits and costs, is asserted rather than measured, so the framing is carrying weight the numbers underneath it never lift.
The author picked the comparisons
No vendor, sponsor or trade body appears in this story, and that is worth saying plainly. But every comparison is chosen by someone arguing a case, and each is framed on the axis that flatters it: energy, with laundering and hot water charged to the reusable while litter, marine plastic and disposal are left outside the frame. A dishwasher-efficiency assumption does most of the work in the mug example. The assumptions never once lean the other way.
Shape trustworthy, digits not
The pattern would probably survive scrutiny: durable goods do carry large upfront energy debts, metals genuinely recycle well, and paper and glass feedstocks are not scarce. The individual figures would not survive unchanged — one already does not. With a single publisher, no linked studies and a visible slip in the marquee comparison, trust the direction of this argument more than any number inside it.
