Isomorphic Labs seeks a $40 billion valuation before its first human trial
Alphabet's Isomorphic Labs is in funding talks at a $40 billion valuation. Crypto Briefing put its prior mark near $17.5 billion, so the ask more than doubles the price of a drug designer that has yet to dose a patient.
The Investor · Invest desk

What happened
- Crypto Briefing, citing an October 8 Bloomberg report, said the valuation would be at least $40 billion and could reach as much as $50 billion.
- The talks come five months after Isomorphic closed a $2.1 billion Series B that drew Thrive Capital, Alphabet and the UK Sovereign AI Fund.
- Eli Lilly, Novartis and Johnson & Johnson are partners, and the 2024 Lilly and Novartis deals carry more than $3 billion in combined potential milestones.

Why it matters
- decision Thrive Capital, which led the Series A and joined the Series B, has to decide whether to buy again at more than twice the mark that preceded these talks.
- exposure Investors who buy at $40 billion are underwriting the plan to start first-in-human trials by the end of 2026; a delay would leave them holding the highest mark with no human data.
- constraint Even if every Lilly and Novartis milestone paid out, the $3 billion-plus would equal roughly 7.5% of a $40 billion valuation, so most of the price has to come from Isomorphic's own pipeline.
A $40 billion valuation is about 14.8 times the disclosed outside money Isomorphic has raised [17]. At the $50 billion top end, the multiple is about 18.5 [18]. Against the prior mark of roughly $17.5 billion, the lower figure adds $22.5 billion of paper value, a 2.3-fold step [19], in the five months since the Series B closed [5]. Round sizes are climbing too. The $2.1 billion Series B was 3.5 times the $600 million Series A raised 14 months earlier [20].
The asset being priced is software [8]. IsoDDE, the Isomorphic Drug Design Engine, builds on DeepMind's AlphaFold protein-structure technology [8], and the company has released no clinical data [9].
If the round closes at $40 billion or more, the figure becomes a price investors paid. For now the talks are preliminary [3]. A lower close, or none, would leave it as an ask. Semafor set the talks against fears that AI spending, on track to far exceed past investment booms, is building a bubble whose burst would bring "a far-reaching shock" [11]. A third outcome is a close at the top of the range, near 2.9 times the prior mark [22].
I think $40 billion is a poor comparable for other private AI drug-discovery companies, even if it closes. It prices Alphabet's majority ownership [13] and a chief executive, Demis Hassabis, who won a Nobel Prize and ran Google DeepMind [4]. Another startup cannot borrow either. Semafor's comparison set was DeepSeek, Moonshot and OpenAI, firms chasing billions to stay ahead in the global AI race [16]. The reports cite no other AI drug-discovery round to set beside this one.
The strongest case against that view comes from the three drugmakers on the partner list. Crypto Briefing wrote that they are betting Isomorphic's tools can speed discovery in ways their internal teams cannot match alone [25]. Their milestone payments arrive only if development goals are hit [23], and Johnson & Johnson's terms were not reported.
Alphabet has kept its majority [13] while outside investors bought into both priced rounds [5]. At $40 billion, a majority stake is worth more than $20 billion on paper [21]. Each higher-priced round lets Alphabet fund drug development without writing the whole check [5]. Isomorphic hopes the new money will speed its push to develop drugs [10]. The spending visible so far is new sites in the US and Switzerland [15].
The one-off reading fails if another AI drug-discovery company without human data raises at a similar step-up within the next year.
What to watch
- Final terms: whether the round closes between $40 billion and $50 billion, and who leads it.
- A first milestone payment from Eli Lilly or Novartis, or disclosure of the Johnson & Johnson deal terms.
