Samsung's contract degrees attract 13.44 applicants for every seat
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix help design Korean university degrees that fund students for years and then hire them at ordinary entry-level pay. Applicants are queuing 13.44 and 9.14 deep for each seat.

What happened
- Sogang University's four-year system semiconductor engineering degree was built with SK Hynix, and second-year student Jung Chae-rin's place on it comes with a guarantee of employment at the company when she graduates.
- Sungkyunkwan's five-year integrated bachelor's and master's in intelligent software was created with Samsung Electronics, which covers tuition for the first three years before students enter a separate hiring process.

Why it matters
- cost The student carries the downside of the funding: repay it on dropping out, hold a 2.3 GPA to keep it and 2.7 to be hired, then serve as many years as the money ran.

Price it from SK Hynix's side. The company covers a Sogang scholar's tuition and, in Jung Chae-rin's case, pays a study incentive allowance of around 300,000 a month; CNBC's account gives that figure without a currency [12]. The degree runs four years [3]. What SK Hynix gets back is a graduate obliged to work for it for a period equal to the duration of that support, which for a fully funded student is about four years [15][22]. The recruit enters at the same rank and on the same base salary and benefits as any other entry-level university hire, the company said [15].
Then the students bid. Samsung's contract courses drew 13.44 applicants for every spot and SK Hynix's 9.14, so the Samsung queue is about 1.47 times as deep per seat [9][21]. With that much excess demand, neither sponsor has to pay more to fill the seats; it can ration them by admission cutoff. Jung said the competition rate and the admission cutoffs were both higher for the 2026 academic year than for 2025 [10]. Inside the Sogang deal, 2.3 keeps the scholarship and 2.7 earns the SK Hynix job, a gap of 0.4 [13][24]. Students who drop out repay what they received, Jung said [14].
Kim Tae-rin, in her third year of the five-year Samsung-linked program at Sungkyunkwan, said: "Juniors from my alma mater keep enrolling in our department every year, and I really feel it when I see that the students coming in tend to have higher and higher grades" [18]. She added: "I don't think I would have been able to get in with my grades if I were applying now" [18]. Her route is the weaker of the two: tuition covered for the first three years, then a separate Samsung hiring process from the second half of third year, which she described as a "minimum procedure" that students must nonetheless pass [16][17].
The growth numbers do not sit together. Jongro Academy counted applicants to contract departments tied to large companies up more than 38% from a year earlier, a category that also takes in courses linked to Hyundai Motor and LG Uplus [7]. Applications to Samsung's contract departments rose 6.5% in the 2026 academic year and to SK Hynix's 12.7% [8]. For both to hold, most of the increase came from sponsors other than the two chipmakers, or the two counts measure different populations [23]. The report does not say how many seats any of the programs has [25].
CNBC sets all of this against prominent entrepreneurs questioning the value of traditional degree programs [1]. I'd read the Korean structure more narrowly. Neither company is competing for these particular graduates in the open market at all, because the hire is settled before the student finishes second year [3]. The counter-thesis is a matter of scale: if the contract cohorts are small against total entry-level engineering intake, this is a recruiting channel with a scholarship attached, and the firms' real graduate cost is still set by the pay packages CNBC says both offer [20]. If either starts lifting stipends or signing partner universities faster than applications grow, the queue is thinner than 13.44 to a seat suggests, and they are the ones chasing supply [6][9].
What to watch
- Jongro Academy's 2027 application counts, and whether the chipmaker-linked courses grow closer to the wider large-company category's rate.
- Whether the masters and PhD scholarships at the Sogang department carry the same service obligation as the undergraduate ones.
- Whether Samsung's third-year hiring step stays a formality as incoming grades keep rising.
