Five semiconductor programs took two-thirds of Korea's job-linked degree applications

Jongro Academy counted a record 8,994 early applications to 13 corporate contract programs for the 2027 year, up 18.2 percent. The 297-to-1 ratio being quoted is three seats at Sogang University. Battery, down 36.2 percent, is one department.

The 297.67 figure is three seats. Sogang University's general essay track for system semiconductor engineering, tied to SK hynix, took 893 applications for those three [9]. The department as a whole drew 1,323 applications at 66.15 per seat [4][12], which puts it at about 20 seats: the essay track holds three, and the other 17 split 430 applications between them, roughly 25 a seat [5]. Hanyang's semiconductor essay track ran at 211 to 1 and Sungkyunkwan's essay-excellence track at 124.10 to 1 [10].

Growth in the cohort is narrower than the record total suggests. Five semiconductor programs drew 5,992 of the 8,994 applications, two-thirds of everything filed [6][1][1]. Their 19.4 percent rise implies about 5,018 a year earlier, so semiconductors added roughly 974 of the 1,387 applications the whole cohort gained, about seven-tenths of the growth [2]. SK hynix's three programs supplied 675 of that increase on their own, just under half the total, while the five programs tied to Samsung Electronics rose 4.2 percent to 4,165 [3][4][5]. The seats behind the semiconductor ratio did not move: 5,992 at 28.53 per seat is about 210 seats, and 5,018 at 23.90 is the same 210 [3].

Battery is one department. The category fell 36.2 percent to 206 applications from 323 [8], and Sungkyunkwan University's battery department, tied to Samsung SDI, fell by 117, the exact size of the category's decline [13][8]. At 10.30 applicants per seat, those 206 applications sit against about 20 seats [6], and they are 2.3 percent of the 8,994 [7].

Ratios also answer to intake decisions. Kyungpook National University cut early admissions for its Samsung-tied mobile engineering major to 13 seats from 20 and the essay track to six from 15; essay applications fell to 229 from 290, and the department's overall ratio rose to 21.62 from 17.85 [14]. On the essay track alone that is 38 applicants a seat against 19, on 61 fewer applications [9]. Across all 13 programs, quotas rose by 15 seats, 4.1 percent, while applications rose 18.2 percent [2][10].

"Corporate contract-based programs have established themselves as a leading preference among science-track applicants, and preferences and admission cutoffs are likely to be affected by trends in the related industries," said Lim Sung-ho, head of Jongro Academy [11]. The evidence for the industry half of that is semiconductors up 19.4 percent, information security up 15.1 percent and automotive up 10.3 percent against battery down 36.2 percent [6][7][8]. Artificial intelligence applications fell 2.7 percent and displays 1.1 percent [8].

I would take this as a one-year ranking of near-term hiring credibility across 13 programs, not a forecast of which Korean industries grow, and two other readings fit the same numbers. Students may be choosing on their own odds and last year's cutoffs, in which case a three-seat track at 297 to 1 tells you about the three seats. Or the 18.2 percent rise is mostly about the labour market, which is what the academy pointed to when it said a tight job market has made programs that lead to employment at major companies a distinct group of sought-after majors among top science-track students [17]. The industry-signal reading breaks in the next round: if battery applications recover while Samsung SDI's outlook does not, or semiconductor applications keep climbing after chip hiring slows, the flow was tracking something else.

What to watch

  • Whether Sungkyunkwan and Samsung SDI trim the roughly 20 battery seats for 2028, which would raise the ratio without a single extra applicant.
  • Sogang's published admission cutoffs for the three-seat essay track, which Lim Sung-ho expects to move with the related industries.
