Korea's job-guaranteed chip departments drew 5,992 applicants for about 210 seats
Applications to the five universities that guarantee jobs at Samsung and SK hynix rose 972 to a record 5,992 for the 2027 cycle, with 675 of the additional forms going to the SK hynix side and competition per place reaching 28.53.

What happened
- Jongro Academy said on the 13th that 5,992 students applied to contract semiconductor departments at Yonsei, Korea, Sogang, Sungkyunkwan and Hanyang in early admissions for 2027, up 972 or 19.4%.
- Average competition at those departments rose to 28.53 applicants per seat from 23.90 a year earlier.
- The five-university total has risen in every cycle since 2,234 for the 2021 academic year, reaching 5,020 for 2026.

Why it matters
- constraint With the implied seat count flat at about 210, the extra 972 applications change entrance scores and nothing about the number of engineers Samsung and SK hynix will hire out of these programs.
- decision From this cycle some students will hold both a provincial medical place and a guaranteed corporate engineering job, and Jongro's Lim Sung-ho says the open question is which one they take.
- exposure The two chipmakers carry an employment obligation to everyone who takes one of these seats, dated to graduation.
- precedent If cutoffs do converge with the regional physician track, a corporate hiring pledge becomes a direct competitor to medical school for the top of Korea's science cohort.
Divide 5,992 applications by 28.53 applicants a seat and the five universities are offering about 210 places; do it again with last year's 5,020 and 23.90 and you get about 210 [1]. The competition figure moved because the numerator did. The extra 972 applicants are competing for the same places [1][1].
The two company groups split the pool exactly: 3,152 applications to the SK hynix-linked departments at Korea, Sogang and Hanyang [7], 2,840 to the Samsung-linked departments at Yonsei and Sungkyunkwan [8], which sums to the 5,992 total [8]. SK hynix took 675 of the 972 additional applications, 69% of the growth [2], and its departments grew 27% year on year against 12% on the Samsung side [3]. Sedaily attributes the gap to the large performance bonuses SK hynix is set to pay [7].
Lim Sung-ho, head of Jongro Academy, named three causes. "The analysis suggests that a tough job market, expectations for the semiconductor cycle and guaranteed employment at large companies have combined to raise the appeal of contract semiconductor departments," he said [11]. Two of those three have been in place for six cycles: the total has risen every year from 2,234 for the 2021 academic year, and this year's count is 2.68 times that [9][5].
So the cycle explanation has to carry the increment. Last year the run nearly flattened, adding 191 applications, or 4.0% [4], and this year's 972 is 5.1 times as large [7].
The 2027 cycle also introduces an overlap. I'd expect cutoffs for these departments to approach those for the regional physician track, the new medical school quota whose graduates must practise in designated provincial areas [10]. "From the 2027 admissions cycle, the introduction of the regional physician track means some students may be accepted to both medical schools and contract semiconductor departments, so attention turns to which they will choose," Lim said [12].
In my view the level is a bid for the employment guarantee and the bonus round explains the marginal 675 [7]. The test is in next year's forms: if SK hynix's payout shrinks and its three departments still take two thirds of the growth [2], the cycle reading is wrong. If applications flatten in the year the bonuses do, Jongro's reading holds. The seat count stays near 210 either way [1].
What to watch
- Whether 2027 cutoff scores for these departments land near the regional physician track's, and how many dual-accepted students pick the chip seat.
- Whether SK hynix's performance bonus payout shrinks next cycle and its three departments' application counts move with it.
- Whether any of the five universities lifts its seat allocation above about 210, the first supply response in seven cycles.
