Hana Financial brings 2,200 finance staff to the Incheon site its data center has occupied since 2017
Hana Financial Group is moving about 2,200 holding-company and affiliate staff into a new Incheon headquarters beside its data center. Hana expects finance and IT staff sharing floors to build AI-driven services faster, a claim its coming product releases will test.

What happened
- Once the move is done the Cheongna site will hold about 4,000 finance and IT workers, counting staff already working at the integrated data center.
- Staff are relocating in stages through the end of the year, with the holding company moving in first, Seoul Economic Daily reported.
- The opening completes Hana Financial Town, a project launched in 2012 that added the integrated data center in 2017 and a training campus in 2019.
- Staff use cloud-based virtual desktops, laptops and 5G and have no fixed desks, booking desks and meeting rooms through an app.

Why it matters
- decision Hana moved its finance side to its technology side, so the disruption of relocating falls on holding-company and affiliate staff while the data center teams stay where they are.
- constraint With moves staged through year-end, the shared-floor setup cannot be judged on this year's results; the full 4,000-person site exists only from next year.
- exposure Hana has not put an amount on its pledge to finance Incheon's small businesses and its AI, biotech, culture and energy industries, so it has taken on a regional obligation of unstated size.
According to the Korea Herald, Hana says closer coordination between its financial businesses and its IT, data and digital teams will speed up the development of new services and help it find growth opportunities [8]. Chairman Ham Young-joo described the building as both an ending and a start. "The opening of the Cheongna headquarters is the culmination of the Hana Financial Town project and marks the first step in a major transformation to align the capabilities of all group companies and employees," Ham said at the ceremony [7].
The physical half of that bet, or rather the half that can be checked today, is in the floor plan. Each new level is about 3,600 square meters against roughly 1,200 in Myeongdong, so a group that filled three Myeongdong floors fits on one Cheongna floor at the same density [2]. Open floors joined by internal staircases are meant to put people from different teams in each other's path [11]. The building also has plenty of room. About 128,000 square meters of floor area for roughly 2,200 arrivals is about 58 square meters a head [9][3]. That figure is gross, before taking out seven basement levels and the sky park and other areas open to the public [16]. Hana did not disclose what the building cost.
The result can go three ways. Hana's version has finance and data staff sharing floors and shipping AI-driven services faster than the two groups did from separate buildings. A second reading credits any speed-up to the cloud desktops and bookable desks, tools that would have worked in Myeongdong too [12]. The third treats the building as the last piece of a property and regional project begun in 2012, with AI as its current label [6].
The ceremony gave the third reading some support. "Hana Financial is now an Incheon company," Incheon Mayor Park Chan-dae said [13]. Ham's own closing line was regional as well: "We will work alongside Incheon as a regional financial partner supporting the growth of its economy," he said [15].
I think the third reading describes most of what has been built so far, and the AI claim is the part Hana still has to earn. The best case against that view is Hana's own. The data center has been on the site since 2017 [6], and about 1,800 of the eventual 4,000 people there are staff not in the relocation count, the data center teams included [1]. If sitting near those people is what the finance side lacked, cloud desktops could not have supplied it and the building can. The evidence that would settle it is a new service built by a team drawn from both groups, with a launch Hana ties to Cheongna. If Hana's product releases over the next year look like the ones before, the 2,200 moves bought floor space and a regional commitment, and the speed claim failed.
What to watch
- What Hana does with its former Myeongdong building, since a sale or lease would show how much cash the move frees up.
- A loan program or figure Hana announces with the city of Incheon that puts a size on the regional commitment Ham made at the opening.
