What happened

  • Earlier tokenization ran through third-party platforms including Archax, Goldman Sachs and Conduit Digital, which issued digital versions of Federated's existing products.
  • Prometheum's correspondent clearing platform will let other broker-dealers offer the tokenized products to their own customers.
  • Federated has not yet disclosed which funds it will tokenize or which blockchains they will use.
  • Federated launched its Digital Treasury Fund, OFFXX, on June 9, 2026, set up so tokenized share classes can be added as regulatory frameworks mature, Crypto Briefing reported.

Why it matters

  • capability An issuer-level share class can remove counterparties that wrapper structures add, because holders of Archax-style ownership tokens carry exposure to the intermediary as well as the fund.
  • contradiction CoinDesk presents early 2027 as the plan. Crypto Briefing calls the same plan a roadmap, not a fixed launch date, so advisers should treat the date as a target with a precondition.
  • decision Federated disclosed a Conduit feeder structure and an in-house class 42 days apart, so it has to choose which funds go out as wrappers and which as shares it issues itself, and it has not said.
  • constraint Adviser reach is set by how many outside brokerages plug into Prometheum without rebuilding their systems, the access barrier Barr described.

Three-quarters of the book is money market funds. Federated held $676.9 billion of them at June 30 [6] against about $911 billion in total [1], a 74.3% share [19], or 74.2% on Crypto Briefing's $912 billion total [7][20] (the two totals differ by 0.11% [21], too little to matter). Barr told CoinDesk that money market funds are a likely starting point [4], so the first tokenized class will probably come from the largest part of the book.

The structures already running show what an in-house class would change. In the October 2025 Archax arrangement, investors got tokenized access to three UCITS money market funds through beneficial ownership tokens on several blockchains [9]. In the Conduit deal, a Conduit-managed fund invests in Federated's Short-Term U.S. Prime Fund [11]. Each wrapper adds a counterparty, and Crypto Briefing says a true onchain share class would strip some of them away [17].

Barr's own case for the onchain share is operational. "You can have instantaneous movement of those funds," Barr said [16].

We think the issuer-level move is real and the early-2027 date [2] is the softer half, and the reason sits with the transfer agents. They are the record keepers who track who owns which fund shares, and Crypto Briefing says their models need to adapt before shares can fully migrate onchain [18]. The counter-thesis is that the vehicle is already built: Crypto Briefing calls OFFXX the most likely testing ground [23], and Prometheum's correspondent platform is the route to other broker-dealers' customers [14], so a first class could ship on time.

A first class that Federated issues itself, on schedule, would support our view of the structure. One that arrives as a feeder, as Conduit's does, would break it, and a date past early 2027 would leave the structure intact and the timing wrong.

What to watch

  • Which funds and blockchains Federated names for the first share classes, and whether OFFXX gets the first one.
  • Whether brokerages beyond Prometheum's own subsidiaries connect to its correspondent clearing platform.
  • Any sign that digital transfer agency models are ready, since Crypto Briefing ties fully onchain share classes to them.
