The HIBLEO-4 satellites carry Globalstar's SPOT service and direct-to-device SOS for smartphones, used by first responders and support teams beyond cell coverage [18].
Emergency messaging is the first pillar of the direct-to-device market and the least mature, with SMS, voice and eventually data expected over the next five years [19]. The roadmap past that is C-3, a 48-satellite constellation Globalstar intends to orbit as early as next year, designed to reach devices indoors and inside vehicles, and apparently funded by Apple's $1.1bn injection [20]. A 48-satellite build is six times the count that just took three years to get eight units off the pad [21].
