Three figures for CrowdStrike, per Crypto Briefing: shares reportedly traded at more than 200 times forward earnings as of early October, the stock was up 126% year-to-date earlier in October, and it traded at around $254 on October 14.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward earnings multiple, early October, reportedly | 200 times, over | 7 | |
| YTD gain, earlier in Oct. | 126% | 6 | |
| Price on Oct. 14, around | $254 | 2 |
What happened
- Bankless attributes the report to The Information and notes that the talks could still fall through.
- OpenAI and Trail of Bits already work together: Patch the Planet, launched in June, has flagged 1,917 issues across 67 open-source codebases, with 462 patches merged.
- The sector has sold off on a lab announcement before: in February, Anthropic launched Claude Code Security and cybersecurity shares fell.
- Earlier in October CrowdStrike stock was up 126% year-to-date, according to Crypto Briefing.
Why it matters
- exposure CrowdStrike holders carry headline risk from AI labs' deal talk, and the exposure grows with the multiple they paid.
- precedent Two selloffs in 2026 tied to lab security news, February and October, make a third likely at the next lab product launch or acquisition report.
- decision Crypto protocols that hire Trail of Bits for audits have a question to put to it if the deal closes: whether it keeps taking outside engagements under OpenAI.
A fall of about 3% to around $254 [2] implies a prior close near $262, a loss of about $8 a share [11]. The multiple makes that larger than it looks. Crypto Briefing reported that in early October the shares traded at more than 200 times forward earnings [7], so if the multiple was still near that level, a 3% fall took at least six turns of earnings out of the price [12].
Crypto Briefing said the trigger was the report itself, with no earnings miss or breach behind it [13]. Its own verdict was that a stock priced that richly can drop on news that does not touch its revenue at all [10]. That gives two readings of the day, and both can be partly true. Investors may now treat AI labs as entrants into security, and a rumor about OpenAI's shopping list is enough to price that in. Or a richly valued stock sells off on any headline. We think the second does more of the work.
Start with what Trail of Bits does. It finds and fixes flaws in open-source software [8]. Crypto Briefing says general-purpose AI tools remain limited at real-time threats next to dedicated security platforms, and that spotting a bug in a code repository is a different task from stopping an active intrusion across thousands of company devices [14]. OpenAI already works with the firm, since Patch the Planet puts OpenAI's models in its engineers' hands [4]. If the deal closes, we'd expect the money to go into code analysis, which Bankless frames as OpenAI's race with Anthropic in AI bug-hunting [15].
CrowdStrike is also a partner of both labs. It integrated its offerings with Anthropic's Claude marketplace in September and takes part in OpenAI's Trusted Access for Cyber program [9]. The shares fell on the day anyway.
Palo Alto fell harder, about 4% against CrowdStrike's 3% [3], and the sources give neither its multiple nor the broader market's move that day. If lower-multiple security names fell as much, valuation explains less of Wednesday and the entrant-threat reading explains more. The cleaner test is CrowdStrike's next results, where Crypto Briefing said any sign of slowing growth could hurt more than a rumor about someone else's acquisition [17].
What to watch
- Whether OpenAI or Trail of Bits confirms the talks, and whether a price surfaces.
- CrowdStrike's next results, where slowing growth would test a valuation that already moved on a rumor.
- How far lower-multiple security stocks fall on the next AI lab security headline compared with CrowdStrike.

A company priced at more than 200 times forward earnings can drop on news that does not touch its revenue at all; the most direct lesson is valuation sensitivity.

A 3% fall to about $254 implies a prior close of about $262, a loss of about $8 per share.

If CrowdStrike's multiple was still near 200 times forward earnings, a 3% fall removes about six turns of forward earnings from the price.
- [13]
The trigger for the CrowdStrike decline was not a bad earnings report or a breach but a rumor about OpenAI's possible acquisition.

A deal would scale up OpenAI's cybersecurity push as it competes with Anthropic in AI bug-hunting.
- [16]
If the deal closes, the open question for crypto is whether Trail of Bits keeps taking protocol engagements under OpenAI's roof; its open-source tooling is not going anywhere.

CrowdStrike's next set of results is a watch item, where any sign of slowing growth could hurt more than a rumor about someone else's acquisition given the elevated expectations.
