Claude Startups approvals proved revocable until founders redeemed the credits
Anthropic paused the $1,000 API credits and free Claude Team year in Claude Startups days after expanding the program on October 6. Applicant notices say startups that already claimed the perks keep them, so the only credit a founder can plan on is a redeemed one.

What happened
- An r/ClaudeCode post said its author was accepted into Claude Startups at 6am and had lost both benefits from the account by 3pm.
- Applicant notices reported by RuntimeWire tie the pause to hundreds of thousands of applications.
- The review covers only the Team and API offers, and the Startup Stack and office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team remain available.

Why it matters
- decision A founder budgeting on Claude Startups credit has one safe line to use, the redeem step, because approvals and dashboard balances can still be reversed by the re-review.
- exposure Legitimate startups that were approved but had not redeemed now risk losing benefits they were told they had, on the same terms as the fake signups the review targets.
- cost Teams that planned on up to five free Team seats for a year now either pay for those seats or wait on a review with no published outcome.
Going by the account a dev.to writer assembled from Reddit threads, one approval went through three steps before it failed.
1. A welcome email arrived [8]. 2. The dashboard showed the credits [8]. 3. Nine hours later the credits were gone, and the redeem link returned "Invalid Offer" [8].
The notice applicants have shared, as RuntimeWire reported it, lets startups that already claimed the benefits keep them [5]. The dev.to post describes benefits vanishing from accounts that had displayed them [8]. Both accounts hold if credit shown on a dashboard and credit claimed through the link are separate states, and the balances that disappeared were never redeemed. An "Invalid Offer" error on the redeem link fits that reading [8].
The r/ClaudeCode post put acceptance at 6am and the loss at 3pm [7]. That is a nine-hour gap [12]. By October 9, three days after the launch [13], the program page no longer appeared to offer the free year of Claude Team, the dev.to writer reported [9].
Eligibility on paper was a company founded within the last five years that builds on Claude [4]. Reddit threads, as the dev.to writer summarized them, found no check that an applicant was a startup, had revenue or had a product [14]. A check on a founding date and a stated intent mostly confirms that the form was filled in. The notice ties the pause to hundreds of thousands of applications [2]. The dev.to writer attributes the surge to fake startups, reseller rings and automated signups [15]. The same writer reports that Anthropic updated its usage policy that week to go after abusive accounts and fake-account networks [16].
Honest applicants sit inside the same review. One founder quoted in the dev.to post said they had a legitimate startup and were rejected anyway. The founder wrote: "I applied with a legitimate startup. Real business." [10] And: "I'm honestly pretty disappointed with how Anthropic handled the rollout." [10] Others who lost credits spent days in support queues without an answer on whether the offer would come back [11].
The review covers the Team and API offers. The Startup Stack and office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team remain available [6]. The dev.to writer listed the original package as a one-time $1,000 credit, a free Team year for up to five seats, higher API limits and up to $45,000 in partner discounts and credits [3]. RuntimeWire's report does not say whether the Startup Stack is that partner bundle.
Letting claimed benefits stand is the defensible part of Anthropic's response, and I think it was the right call. A founder who redeemed on the first day keeps the credit, and the re-review applies to applications that never reached that step [5].
What to watch
- Whether Anthropic publishes the criteria and timeline for re-reviewing applications it had already approved.
- Whether the free year of Claude Team returns to the program page, and what verification step comes with it.
- Any report of credits removed from accounts that had already redeemed them, which would contradict the notice.
