A long walk to the station and a day of lifting at work both load the cardiovascular system, and neither one gets filed as a workout [14]. That unrecorded middle is what all-day collection is aimed at: the effort that happened without anyone pressing start, which a denser record would finally include [3].
Teams tell themselves users want a better number from this. What users actually do with wearable health data is look at one number in the morning and decide whether today is a hard day or an easy one. That matters because the two things reported here carry very different price tags, and Digital Trends says there is no confirmation the projects are connected [7]. Restyling a wellness screen is a design sprint. Polling a sensor tens of thousands of times a day is a power budget, and it lands on the wrist of someone who already charges the thing daily. Digital Trends frames continuous monitoring as an area where Apple has lagged some rivals [13], which reads less as a sensor deficit than as a choice Apple made about battery and is now revisiting.
If you are deciding whether to plan around Apple's denser data or keep a third-party dependency, put the metric you care about on two axes. Down one side: does the number change something the user does in the next 24 hours, such as skipping the hard session or going to bed earlier. Along the other: can you compute it from data you already collect. Both yes, and you should ship it with what you have rather than wait on anyone's roadmap.
