Anthropic takes Opaque Systems' privacy technology and part of its team for an undisclosed price

Anthropic took a license and some engineers from Opaque Systems, a startup valued near $300 million, cryptobriefing.com reported. Opaque's own post confirms an agreement but not those terms, and no price was disclosed.

What happened

  • Opaque's system produces cryptographic evidence, which it calls attestations, that an AI workload ran as intended and followed the required policies.
  • Opaque built its verifiable AI tools with Nvidia, Intel, Microsoft and Google, and its customer and partner list already included ServiceNow, Accenture and Anthropic.
  • CEO Aaron Fulkerson and co-founders Raluca Ada Popa and Ion Stoica are named as key figures in the deal, though their roles going forward have not been detailed.
  • Anthropic has not said when the technology will appear in its products or which customers will get access first.

Why it matters

  • capability If the technology reaches Anthropic's products, a regulated buyer could get a verifiable record of what ran and under what policy from the model vendor itself.
  • exposure ServiceNow and Accenture, both on Opaque's customer and partner list, now depend on a vendor that has lost part of its engineering team.
  • decision Anthropic took the capability and the engineers and left Opaque's contracts and obligations behind, so it has no second company to run.

The only price in the record, the valuation, belongs to a different transaction [4]. Opaque's roughly $300 million is about 9.5 times the $31.6 million it had raised in total, and $24 million of that, or 76%, arrived in the Series B [12][13][14]. Investors set that price for new shares at one date. What a license and part of an engineering team are worth to Anthropic was settled in a separate negotiation.

Cryptobriefing's explanation is commercial. Anthropic wants to sell AI to enterprises, the most lucrative of them are often the most cautious, and banks, hospitals and insurers hold valuable data under strict rules about where it goes and who touches it [15]. Opaque's platform includes components designed to help organizations meet regulatory and audit requirements [16]. We think that direction is right, with the caveat that the motive is cryptobriefing's inference.

Two other readings fit the same facts. Anthropic was already on Opaque's customer and partner list [5], so the license may secure a relationship it already had. And Opaque's post names a Weight Custody Manifest among its projects [9]. By its name that is about model weights, and a team that can attest where a model ran could be put to protecting Anthropic's own weights.

The two sources also disagree about what is left of Opaque. Cryptobriefing says the company continues to exist as its own company [2]. Opaque wrote: "Today, we're proud to share a new agreement with Anthropic that carries OPAQUE's work forward." [7] The rest of the post is a retrospective in the past tense: "We built a company from university research." [10]

We'd call the regulated-industry reading wrong if the engineers who moved turn out to be a handful [4], or if the first deployment protects Anthropic's own models and no bank, hospital or insurer is attached to it.

What to watch

  • Whether Opaque says it will keep serving ServiceNow and Accenture after losing part of its engineering team.
  • Any disclosure of license terms, including how long it runs and whether other buyers can still license the same technology.
  • An Anthropic product date and the first customers named for the technology.
