Amazon cuts fewer than 1,000 more Stores jobs in a rolling cost overhaul
Amazon has cut fewer than 1,000 more corporate roles, mostly in its Stores division, after removing about 30,000 in two earlier rounds. The smaller, unit-level round suggests cutting is now a standing part of how Amazon runs its corporate staff, with a cost that falls on planning as well as payroll.

What happened
- Amazon's earlier reductions were about 14,000 corporate roles in October 2025 and another 16,000 in January 2026.
- Customer service and selling partner services were among the areas hit, with staff in the US, UK and India affected.
- The round coincided with Prime Big Deal Days, one of Amazon's largest shopping events of the year.
- An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that the company eliminated a small number of roles on Tuesday.
- Amazon is preparing to spend a record $220 billion on data centers, chips and other AI infrastructure, Business Insider reported.

Why it matters
- cost Rolling cuts move part of the cost off the severance line and onto planning, where it is carried by managers who stop committing to work several quarters out.
- decision Operators planning reductions now have a working model of the alternative to one big programme: small unit-level rounds that limit each shock but have no clear end date.
- precedent With Amazon calling structure review something it is always doing, further Stores-style rounds become the expected pattern there, and Jassy's AI forecast points the same way for years.
- exposure Amazon staff in units and countries spared this time now work under the prospect of a similar round, and employees have already raised Mexico and the rest of Europe internally.
A round of fewer than 1,000 people is less than 3.3% of the roughly 30,000 roles Amazon has already removed [21]. A skeptic would call that housekeeping. Neither report gives Amazon's current corporate headcount, so the share of the workforce affected cannot be worked out. On size, the skeptic is right. The earlier reductions came in two major rounds [3], and CEO Today wrote that Amazon now "appears to be making more targeted changes within individual businesses" [9].
Amazon's own account treats review as constant. A spokesperson told Business Insider the company had changed parts of Stores "because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities" [8]. "We're always looking at our team structures to ensure we're best set up to move fast as we innovate for customers," the spokesperson said [7].
The trade-off is between management's flexibility and the planning horizon of the people being managed. Small rounds inside one division let leadership adjust one business at a time [9]. Business Insider reported months of anxiety among corporate staff before this round. One person told the publication that some leaders have scaled back planning for the next several quarters, partly because they expected their teams or priorities could change [12]. Employees have been studying leadership meetings, calendar invitations and team changes for clues [13].
The reasons given for the cuts run on different clocks. Jeff Bezos said this week that Amazon hired aggressively during the pandemic as online demand surged [18]. That overhang ends once headcount is corrected. Andy Jassy has told employees he expects generative AI and AI agents to reduce Amazon's total corporate workforce over the next few years [16]. I think the second clock matters more to anyone planning headcount, because it has no stated end. CEO Today cautioned that the Stores cuts cannot simply be put down to AI, since Amazon has also cited pandemic-era expansion, bureaucracy and the need to move resources toward areas with more growth potential [17].
Both reports are about one company. CEO Today's reference to "a wider challenge facing major employers" [19] is that publication's judgement about the sector. It does not show that other large employers have started cutting in small rounds.
At Amazon, this quarter's round runs into the next one. Affected staff have a 90-day notification period, and many want to find another job inside Amazon before their employment ends [15]. One post in an internal Slack channel asked whether taking an outside offer during that window would mean giving up severance [15]. The channel, which has nearly 37,000 members, filled with questions about internal job postings and whether more notices were coming [14]. Others asked whether the cuts would reach Mexico and other parts of Europe [20].
What to watch
- Whether Amazon runs a similar unit-level round outside Stores, or in Mexico and other European countries that employees asked about.
- Whether Jassy turns his expectation that AI will shrink the corporate workforce into a stated headcount target or timeline.
- Whether other large employers disclose small, division-level cuts after major rounds, which would show whether Amazon's pattern extends beyond one company.
