Viabot's sweeper swaps its own batteries to stay out 24 hours on sensors that flag loitering

Viabot's $24m Series A funds a sweeper whose route-planning cameras and lidar also identify loitering, with staff pulled in only when the machine notifies them. Deployments include retailers, universities and healthcare sites.

What happened

Why it matters

  • decision One contract line pays for the brush and the cameras, so the buyer's review has to cover detection and site notice before the first shift, and that review does not usually live with the cleaning budget.
  • exposure The customer is briefed on the detection function during the sale; the person crossing a hospital lot at midnight has no way to ask what the machine flagged or to whom.

A student cuts across a campus lot at one in the morning and steps around a machine working the curb line. According to TNW, Viabot says that machine's sensors can identify activity including loitering and trespassing in restricted areas, and that human personnel respond to the resulting alerts [10]. The company's position is that sweeping is the primary function and the security work is supplemental, supporting the guards a site already employs [11]. The buyer knows what it bought, and TNW notes that these are places the public walks through without being told what the machine can detect [14].

Duty cycle is the part a facilities team should price. At about six hours a pack, a 12-hour day means one self-swap and a 24-hour day means three [7][22]. Viabot sells the swap as a proprietary feature for customers who want 12 to 24 hours of sweeping and debris removal [7]. China's robot traffic units run eight or nine hour shifts, so a full day out is about 2.7 times a nine-hour rota [9][23]. The cameras, lidar, depth sensors and differential GPS that plan the route are the same ones available for detection across all of those hours [5].

The base supports interchangeable tools, according to Viabot [6]. The brush is the job it does now, and the platform underneath is what renews on the contract. It is sold as robotics-as-a-service, so the hardware doing the detecting stays with the vendor [4]. TNW does not say what the sensors record, or how long any of it is kept.

The market number in the pitch needed a date. Viabot's original fact sheet cited Keep America Beautiful's latest study at nearly 50 billion pieces of litter, and that was the 2020 study [18]. Keep America Beautiful published a new National Litter Study in May finding litter down 34% between 2020 and 2025, with roughly 35 billion pieces remaining, roadway litter down 22% and waterway litter down 45% [19]. Quoting the old count overstates the current one by about 43% [24]. Viabot says the dated figure was included in error and that its updated fact sheet corrects and contextualises it [20]. TNW flagged a $9.1bn annual business cleanup cost as a second number that needs a date [21].

The test of whether detection is supplemental is the notice a site would have to post at the entrance: forty words saying what the machine can detect and who receives the alert. Whether the sensor set exceeds what the cleaning task needs, and whether anyone on the buyer's side is notified when it fires, decide where the contract lands. Cameras and lidar for path planning also perform behavioural detection, so on this machine the sensor set does exceed the cleaning task [5][10]. If the notice cannot be written without routing it to counsel, the detection function is not supplemental in that deployment, whatever the invoice calls the primary one. Ascento's guard robot carries thermal and infrared cameras and is sold openly as security [15].

What to watch

  • Whether Viabot publishes what the cameras and lidar record, who can request it, and how long it is retained.
  • Whether a university or hospital customer posts site notice naming the detection function, and in what words.
  • Whether the interchangeable-tool base ships a head sold as security work rather than cleaning.
