The funding chain is specific. The engineering step that mattered is small and legible. In 2016 a Penn team including Gavin Kenneally abandoned heavy central gearboxes and moved the motors into the legs, which improved the machine's ability to sense the ground and react faster to uneven terrain [7]. That built on earlier MIT work funded by DARPA [8], and in 2019 MIT's lab showed Mini Cheetah, a more powerful quadruped that could do backflips [9]. Months before that, Ben Katz published a master's thesis on the Mini Cheetah actuators [10]; about six months later, he says, Chinese manufacturers were selling copies of those actuators on AliExpress [11]. Katz, who worked in MIT's Biomimetic Robotics Lab, says the dimensions of Unitree's Go series match Mini Cheetah almost to the millimetre, and that Mini Cheetah came out of a university consortium also funded through US military programs [12]. Kenneally's read is that the program's output became the basis for the first Unitree robots that could be built in volume: "essentially this was the first Unitree robot that had any scale" [13].
Unitree was founded in 2013 by Wang Xingxing, then 26 [14]. His 2016 master's thesis at Shanghai University cited MIT's Cheetah work, acknowledged the American lab's contribution, cited an ARL-funded Penn paper, and listed defence and security alongside domestic and educational uses as future applications [15]. Unitree's own site states that it developed the motors, gearboxes, controllers and some of the sensors for its quadrupeds in house [16].
The volume numbers explain why this is a supply question rather than a citation dispute. Corporate documents show Unitree sold more than 5,500 humanoids and 18,000 quadrupeds last year [17], and the company was valued at about $9 billion ahead of its Shanghai listing [18]. That is roughly 23,500 machines, or about $383,000 of valuation per unit shipped [1], with quadrupeds outselling humanoids more than three to one [2]. Even if every quadruped had been a Go2, that line would be under $29 million of hardware revenue [3]. No US company has yet reached mass production of humanoids or quadrupeds at that scale [19]. The researchers quoted do not argue the Army should have classified the work; their complaint is that the US cannot convert breakthroughs into cheap serial products [20].
Watch whether procurement rules catch up with the lineage: a platform documented next to PLA troops [3], sold at consumer prices [2], with an in-house-claimed drivetrain [16] is the kind of item that gets restricted after purchase orders are signed, not before. Solid commercial facts, causal lineage overstated relative to proof
Mildly overstated. The commercial and regulatory layer (shipments, price, valuation, import ban) is well grounded, and the story's framing as a procurement question is defensible. But the headline inheritance narrative rests on resemblance and participant belief, is denied in effect by Unitree's own component statement, and the piece offers no IP, contractual or export-control finding that would make the lineage actionable; the valuation arithmetic also invites over-reading, since even a full-price Go2 fleet implies only ~$28.8m of hardware revenue.
