Apple bets the iPhone Duo on software while its hardware lands mid-pack

The dock is the one item on the list that no Android maker got to first. On other iPhones it sits along the bottom; on the Duo it runs vertically down the right-hand edge, and the iOS 27 build on the Duo matches neither the standard phone version nor the iPad one ^[17][18]. That is a real interface decision. It is also, in the Verge's account, close to the whole of what has been shown of the software case, which leaves the line that no rival has rewritten folding software the way Apple has ^[19] as a claim rather than a finding.

The hardware half can be checked with arithmetic. The Verge puts the Duo at 254g, 26 percent heavier than the Z Fold 8, a difference of 53g ^[9]. Back that out and the Samsung sits at about 201g ^[1]; 53 divided by 201 is 26.4 percent, so the comparison holds ^[2]. That gap shows up in a shirt pocket before it shows up in a spec table, and the last Samsung foldable that heavy shipped in 2022 ^[10].

Endurance has the same shape. Apple quotes 24 hours of regular use ^[12]. Honor's Magic V6, using silicon-carbon cells, is quoted at two days, and the Verge found no sign Apple has adopted that chemistry ^[11][13]. The rear cameras are two 48-megapixel sensors with no telephoto, near-identical to the Z Fold 8, while Google, Motorola and Xiaomi are shipping three lenses across their foldable lines ^[14]. At $1,999, Apple took roughly Samsung's set of compromises ^[15].

The buyer this suits is the one who opens and closes the thing a dozen times a day and wants the layout to survive it. On paper the Duo lands level with the field and behind it in places ^[20], so the money is riding on the second between closed and open.

Nothing in the Verge's account measures what foldable owners actually do after they unfold, so the multitasking case is untested rather than proven, and it is testable in a week. Axis one: whether an unfold usually puts one app on the big screen or two. Axis two: whether the change of state costs a step, such as a re-tap or a lost scroll position. One app and no cost, and the purchase is a bigger screen, which a lighter body at the same hardware level also delivers. Two apps and a step saved, and the right-edge dock is where the $1,999 goes.

Reviewers will have the crease photos when it launches next month ^[16], and per the Verge even an Apple win there is narrow, given Samsung's titanium display layers and Oppo's 3D-printed hinge fill ^[5][6]. The harder thing to photograph is app layout across two states. If the first week of unfolds turns out to be mostly video and browsing, the software polish is decoration and the 53 grams is the story.
