When two people need to move one photo between a Pixel and an iPhone, the Pixel owner often gives up and opens WhatsApp instead. That is the practical problem this change addresses. It is worth separating what teams tell themselves about that moment from what happens in it: decks treat file transfer as an ecosystem consideration weighed at purchase, while in practice it is a thirty-second problem solved by whatever failed least last time. That is why so many shared photo libraries are assembled from messaging attachments that arrived compressed unless somebody dug into settings and turned compression off [13].
The rollout is uneven in a way that lands on whoever writes the internal one-pager. Pixel owners have nothing to configure [4]. Samsung owners have to find "Share with Apple devices" under Connected devices > Quick Share [4]. Both then need the iPhone set to Everyone for 10 Minutes [5], so a first send costs two settings screens for a Samsung owner and one for a Pixel owner [17]. The 10 minutes lapses on its own, so anyone who does this monthly will be re-enabling it every time [16], and the receiving iPhone still has to accept the file [6]. Going the other way, from AirDrop on the iPhone, needs the Android side opened up under Quick Share > Who can share with you [7].
For handsets outside that group, Google pushed a QR fallback that works on any Android phone [8]. It is a different product behind the same button: the iPhone camera scans the code, lands on a Google web address, and downloads from a page [9]. Google says those files sit in the cloud for 24 hours before secure deletion and do not count toward Drive storage quota [10]. A session caps at 1,000 files to at most 20 iPhones, iPads, or Macs [11], which multiplies out to 20,000 deliveries [15], a ceiling nobody standing in a hallway will reach. The number that matters is the 24 hours, because that path is cloud-mediated rather than device-to-device and leaves a copy your Drive storage reporting will not surface [18].
Two options are off the table before you start. Bluetooth file transfer does not work, because Apple restricts iPhone Bluetooth to accessories [12]. iCloud is not a cross-platform answer, while Drive and Dropbox run on both sides [14].
The grid that sorts this for your context has two axes: whether both people are in the same room, and whether a copy on someone else's server is acceptable. Same room, no outside copy wanted: the direct Quick Share to AirDrop handshake [1]. Same room, copy fine: the QR path [8]. Not the same room, and the file has to arrive intact: a Drive or Dropbox link [14]. Not the same room, and quality does not matter much: a messaging app with compression left on [13]. Bluetooth occupies no cell [12].
The practical default becomes the direct path for in-person transfers, with one cloud link path kept for everything else. The tradeoff belongs in the same sentence: the direct path rests on Apple continuing to leave Google's implementation alone, which Wired describes as non-intervention [2], and on a window the user sets by hand and that expires [16], while every fallback either leaves a copy somewhere [18] or costs you the pixels [13].

Google recently added support for AirDrop, Apple's previously closed-off device-to-device sharing protocol, to newer Pixel phones.
The AirDrop functionality has been rolled out to other phones, including recent Pixel and Galaxy handsets.
On Samsung phones, users must open Settings, then Connected devices > Quick Share, and enable Share with Apple devices; there is no such toggle on Pixel phones, where it works right away.
On iOS the feature needs enabling too: Settings > General > AirDrop, set to Everyone for 10 Minutes.
The iPhone appears in the Android share panel's available devices, and the transfer still needs to be accepted on the iPhone.
Transfers work in the other direction, starting from AirDrop on an iPhone, as long as the Android device is set to receive from any other device under Quick Share > Who can share with you.

The strongest material is the part any reader can falsify in two minutes: Wired's menu paths, the acceptance prompt, the reverse-direction setting. The weakest is everything that carries weight — 24-hour retention, secure deletion, 1,000 files, 20 devices — which is Google's word repeated without documentation or a second test. Apple, whose protocol this is, never speaks.
Shipping on retail phones, uptake unmeasured
This is not a preview build. Wired describes the AirDrop path working on Pixel and Galaxy handsets people already own, with the QR route available on any Android phone. What no one supplies is scale: no version numbers, no eligible-device list, no indication of how many users have flipped the Samsung toggle. Availability is documented; use is not.
Frame slightly outruns the mechanism
The piece opens with bricks coming out of Apple's walled garden and then spends its length on a toggle in Samsung's Connected devices menu, a 10-minute iOS window that expires, and a fallback that hands the file to a Google web page. The mechanism is more modest than the framing, and the thing that would make it durable — Apple choosing not to intervene — is presented as an apparent absence rather than a stated position.
Google narrates its own plumbing
Every operational promise about the QR path — how long a copy lives in the cloud, that deletion is secure, that it escapes Drive quota — comes from the company running that cloud, and arrives without a policy page behind it. The counterparty with the most at stake, Apple, contributes nothing, so the only interested voice in the story is the one shipping the feature.
Solid at the menu level, thin above it
Procedure is the easy part to trust because it is the easy part to check. Above the menus the ground gets soft fast: how long Apple's forbearance lasts, whether the retention promise holds, what an iOS update does to a reimplemented protocol, and a per-session delivery ceiling that only exists if two separate limits happen to multiply.
