OS3 prices hotel towel folding at $2.50 an hour on hardware it built down to the actuators

The two-person, YC-backed startup has published enough of HALE 1.0's spec sheet to check the machine, down to 22 actuators and nine pounds of lift per arm, while the hourly rate it quotes still needs a duty cycle before anyone can price it.

Why it matters

Two arms at nine pounds nominal each is 18 pounds of combined lift [4], sitting on a base that weighs 440 pounds [5]. The base therefore weighs about 24 pounds for every pound the arms nominally lift [19]. Towels fit inside that envelope. Most of the mass is base and battery, and OS3 says the battery covers a full workday and charges from a standard outlet [6].

Twenty-two actuators for 22 degrees of freedom is one motor per joint [3]. Two arms, a telescoping torso that changes working height and a head-like camera assembly all draw on those 22 [7]. The legs a humanoid would spend actuators on are gone, replaced by the omnidirectional wheeled base [7].

The stop list shows where OS3 drew its trust boundary. Watchdogs halt the base when commands become stale, and the machine can be stopped from a rear touchscreen or a mobile app [9]. Manipulation and hardware control run on the robot itself, under a local execution policy [8]. According to the report, the split architecture acknowledges a central constraint in working robotics, which is that a cloud model can take time to reason [17]. A 440-pound wheeled base in a corridor is the part that cannot wait for a round trip [5].

The same report frames OS3's bet as cheaper wheeled hardware, video pretraining and one narrow repetitive workflow set against capital-heavy humanoid robotics [22]. For the hourly figure to survive contact with a buyer's ledger, it has to absorb the machine, the charging window and whoever is on the other end of that mobile stop button. Eight hours at $2.50 is $20 of machine time a shift [20], and the eight hours is mine: the account of OS3's specification does not include the utilisation assumption or the amortisation period behind the rate [18]. OS3 is not alone in publishing a number without its denominator, since YC credits Hailey with work on systems handling more than $19 billion in trading volume, a figure presented without a breakdown of his individual contribution [16].

The options list already separates the two businesses. Front LiDAR is standard and rear LiDAR is included on developer units [10]. The machines OS3 runs itself in hotel laundry rooms do not get the rear sensor; the ones other developers buy or lease do [10][14].

OS3 says it owns the robot architecture, actuators, control stack, model and training loop instead of assembling them from several vendors [11], and Chanana's stated work at OS3 spans soldering the machines and training the models that control them [15]. For a company founded in 2025 with two people on its listed team [12], that is a lot of machining to own. YC says its standard investment in each accepted company is $500,000, and it is OS3's only publicly verified backer [13].

What to watch

  • Whether OS3 publishes a utilisation assumption, an amortisation period or a lease price alongside the $2.50 hourly rate.
  • Whether a named hotel operator runs a paid HALE 1.0 fleet, and how many machines per laundry room.
  • Whether OS3 identifies a backer beyond Y Combinator, or sells developer units at a disclosed price.
