Kyushu University fed shoreline isopods nothing but polystyrene board for a week and found the effect in their gut transcriptomes rather than in their survival, which puts real weight on the choice of control group.

The control animals ate nothing for the week, and that sets the ceiling on what the survival comparison can support. The 3.8-day gap works out to 12 percent of the control mean of 31.6 days [4], it runs in the direction of harm, and it did not reach statistical significance [3]. The report on the study does not say how many animals were in each survival group [15], so "not significant" here describes the resolution of the experiment as much as it describes the plastic. The comparison a risk assessor would want, foam against the stranded organic matter these scavengers normally eat [11], was not the one run [2].
The expression data are the more interesting half, mostly because of which genes moved. Cytochrome P450, UDP-glucuronosyltransferase and sulfotransferase between them cover both phases of the conventional detoxification route, the initial chemical modification of a foreign compound and its conversion into a form that can be excreted [5]. Both phases moving together is what you would expect if the gut were handling a chemical rather than an inert bulky solid, and the reported results do not identify one. A DNA repair gene rose as well [6].
The downward move is harder to explain away. Several digestive enzyme genes, including one involved in breaking down plant fibers, were expressed at lower levels in the foam-fed animals [6]. Missing substrate cannot account for that direction, because the controls had nothing in their guts at all [2] and still expressed those enzymes more strongly.
The microbiome comparison is thinner. Within-animal diversity and overall community composition were indistinguishable across the four microbial domains examined [7], and with three foam-fed specimens carrying the archaeal and bacteriophage pattern [8], a presence-or-absence result in organisms that rare is a lead worth following rather than a finding. One of the three archaeal taxa is Methanospirillum, a methane producer [8], which would be worth something if it recurs at larger sample sizes.
Professor Emeritus Yuji Oshima, who led the work, puts it about where the data put it: the foam-fed animals looked healthy and lived about as long as the controls, their guts differed in chemical-defense gene expression, and whether those differences translate into functional changes is unresolved [9]. Sublethal endpoints are the right place to look in an animal that can go a month without eating [3], since a one-week exposure [2] leaves a survival curve almost nothing to resolve. What the expression data do not yet tell you is whether an isopod running its detoxification pathway harder pays for it in growth, molting or offspring.

Researchers at Kyushu University report in Marine Pollution Bulletin on what happens when wharf roaches eat expanded polystyrene (EPS), using multi-omics analysis of gut gene expression and gut microbiome composition; the team was led by Professor Emeritus Yuji Oshima of the Faculty of Agriculture.
Field-collected wharf roaches were divided into two groups: one was given only pieces of a commercially available polystyrene foam board for one week, and the control group was given no food.
The phys.org account of the study does not state how many wharf roaches were in each group of the lifespan experiment.
EPS exposure did not significantly affect survival: foam-fed wharf roaches lived an average of 27.8 days compared with 31.6 days for the unfed controls, and the 3.8-day difference was not statistically significant.
Gut gene expression in EPS-fed wharf roaches was higher for three detoxification enzymes, cytochrome P450, UDP-glucuronosyltransferase and sulfotransferase, which together represent both major phases of the conventional detoxification pathway: initial chemical modification of foreign compounds and their conversion into more readily excreted forms.
A gene involved in DNA repair also showed higher expression in EPS-fed animals, while several genes encoding digestive enzymes, including one involved in breaking down plant fibers, were expressed at lower levels.

One university account, group sizes withheld
27.8 days against 31.6, three named detoxification enzymes, four microbial domains: the figures are precise, and every one of them reaches us through a single Kyushu-sourced account of a paper it cites by DOI. How many roaches were in each survival group is never stated, and the only count given arrives sideways in 'all three EPS-fed specimens'. A null survival result with an undisclosed sample size is close to uninterpretable, which limits how much weight the lead finding can take.
No uptake to measure
This is a laboratory result about gut transcriptomes, and our coverage records no cleanup programme, procurement change, standard or rule taking it up. The closing appeal to improve EPS design, recovery and disposal names no body that has acted on it, so there is nothing to score.
Closing line overstates the microbiome result
phys.org's own summary says microbial diversity and community composition did not differ, then its last paragraph tells readers that stranded foam changes the animals' gut microbiome. What actually shifted was gene expression, plus three archaeal taxa and one phage family present in three foam-fed animals and absent from three controls. Oshima's quote is the careful passage, drawing the line at 'no visible harm' not meaning 'no biological effect'; the stretch belongs to the framing built around him.
University communications, one voice
This reads as institutional science communication carried through a wire: the lead author is the only person quoted, his university is the only source, and it finishes with a policy argument about EPS design, recovery, disposal and coastal cleanup that no named party makes. The interest is reputational rather than commercial, and it shows in the decision to lead on biological effects from a study whose survival comparison found none.
Measurements firm, meaning open
The measurements are reported cleanly and the paper can be looked up, so the transcriptome differences are safe enough to cite as reported. Their meaning for roaches on a real shoreline is looser: the comparison animals were starving, the sequencing rested on three specimens per group, and a single publisher stands behind the entire account.
