Earthshot and Exeter turn tipping-point science into a shortlist of 51 solutions

Exeter and The Earthshot Prize say 51 solution areas sit near thresholds where progress becomes self-propelling. The prize co-wrote the report and will use it to choose what it backs through 2030.

What happened

Why it matters

  • decision Because the prize co-authored the targeting science and will apply it, the report's conditions are now selection criteria for the solutions it funds, not only a description of how change spreads.

Every one of the three areas the announcement works through in detail has already moved, which makes them demonstrations that self-reinforcing change happens rather than tests of whether a threshold can be identified before it is crossed. The strongest is clean energy, presented as a master cascade in which cheaper solar and wind improved the economics of electric transport, clean buildings, industry and cleaner air [7]. The number carrying it is a cost fall of around 90% over the past decade, leaving solar the cheapest source of electricity in most of the world [6].

Work that out per year and it is a decline of about 21%, compounded, every year for ten years [13]. Fast, and also gradual, which matters for what the word tipping is doing: the mechanism described is a loop in which growing deployment lowers manufacturing cost and lower cost unlocks more deployment [6]. The loop is narrated in one direction. Which term moved first in a given year is passed over, and that is precisely the question facing anyone trying to apply a small push to a system they believe is close to the same kind of loop.

The thing the announcement does not tell you is how the 51 were arrived at. There is no count of candidate solutions assessed, no per-solution estimate of distance from a threshold, and no breakdown of how the 51 distribute across the five Earthshots [15]. Split evenly, that is about ten apiece [14], but the split is the interesting part, since the five domains differ in how much of their evidence is priced. The report does at least state its gating conditions plainly: cost-competitiveness with the damaging incumbent, practical and geographic availability, and performance, the last of which is cut off mid-sentence in the announcement [11].

Tim Lenton of Exeter, whose earlier tipping-point work the report extends, says the study identifies the tipping points that collectively represent the best chance of repairing the planet and how to reach them [4]. Jason Knauf, the prize's chief executive, says it explodes the myth that solutions to climate and nature are out of reach [5]. Both quotes read differently once you hold the structure in view: the prize co-authored the targeting science and will use it to decide which solutions it backs [1][3].

The logic itself says a nudge cascades only where a system already sits near a threshold, and negative thresholds such as Amazon dieback are the same physics run the other way [12]. So the figure that would make this list operational is per solution: how far from tipping, on what evidence. Publish that and a funder can rank 51 candidates by the cost of the push. Short of it, the test is simply whether allocations move toward the named areas, and the prize has said its own will [3].

What to watch

  • Publication of the full report with a per-solution distance-to-threshold estimate and the number of candidates screened to reach 51.
  • Whether the next set of solutions The Earthshot Prize backs comes from the 51 named areas.
  • Whether the High Seas Treaty, in force since January with more than 140 countries behind it, produces enforced protected areas rather than designated ones.
