Honda puts money behind iron-nitride magnets that ship from Sartell in 2027

The announcement names a 287,000-square-foot plant in Minnesota, an annual ceiling of 1,500 tons and a 2027 start. It puts no number on Honda's investment and no magnetic performance figure on the record.

Why it matters

A sourcing engineer reading an investment announcement is checking whether it changes the bill of materials for the next program. Honda's leaves that bill of materials where it was. The announcement carries no amount, no equity stake, no supply agreement and no Honda motor or vehicle program attached to iron nitride magnets [11].

What is on the record is a diagnosis and a hope, both from named people. "Niron Magnetics has an innovative permanent magnet technology that does not require rare earth materials. Most electric propulsion motors today use permanent magnets made from rare earth metals, which are subject to resource constraints and fluctuations in market conditions," said Mahito Shikama, Director, Executive Officer of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. [3]. He added that "Niron Magnetics is addressing these challenges, and Honda has high hopes for its potential" [4]. Jonathan Rowntree, CEO of Niron Magnetics, said the company was "encouraged by their confidence in our technology and vision for scaling rare-earth-free permanent magnets across a broad range of applications" [6].

Niron is the party with a dated, physical commitment. The company recently announced a 287,000-square-foot magnet plant in Sartell, Minnesota, scheduled to begin operating in 2027 [7]. Once running, it is expected to produce up to 1,500 tons of iron nitride permanent magnets a year for automotive, industrial and advanced technology applications [8]. That ceiling works out to about 4.1 tons a day if the line runs every day of the year [13]. Niron also lists robotics, industrial automation, AI and data center infrastructure and consumer electronics as targets for the material [9], so the automotive share of that output is a fraction the announcement does not break out.

What a motor designer needs from all this is a specification. The announcement gives no energy product, no coercivity and no operating temperature range for iron nitride, and describes the technology only as intended to support performance, cost stability and sustainability goals [12][14]. Nobody in it says a Honda motor has been built with these magnets, or that one is being tested. On this evidence, rare-earth-free magnets have a funded factory and a customer's stated interest, and the step where a buyer qualifies a part against a datasheet has not been reported.

Anyone holding a magnet exposure has two things to check, and they sit in different places. The first is whether the alternative has a plant with a date and a stated volume. Niron does, for 2027, at up to 1,500 tons [7][8]. The second is whether it has a part number in your bill of materials, with a price and a qualification report behind it. This announcement stops short of that [11].

Four outcomes fall out of those two answers. No plant and no part number is a lab sample. A plant with no part number is funded capacity, which is where Niron sits today. A part number with no second plant is a single-source risk you have already accepted. Both is dual sourcing, which is the only quadrant that actually reduces exposure. Honda's investment moves iron nitride one square, and moves it in 2027 [15]. For a program quoting motors this quarter, the magnet is still a rare-earth part [10].

What to watch

  • Whether Honda or Niron discloses an investment amount, a stake, or an offtake agreement for iron nitride magnets.
  • Whether Niron publishes energy product, coercivity and temperature data a motor designer can specify against.
  • Whether the Sartell plant hits its 2027 start, and what share of the 1,500-ton ceiling is committed to automotive customers.
