The 300 patents JLR is advertising [15] mostly bought things a buyer cannot see from the kerb: motors that retrim torque in 50 milliseconds when a tyre slips, which the company puts at 100 times quicker than a petrol car working through mechanical gears [16], and a heat pump that recycles waste heat to hold up to 25 miles of range in freezing weather [19]. The one-pedal system is tuned for slopes of up to 45 degrees, and the sealed pack and motors allow 900 mm of wading [17][18]. Each of those has a moment where the owner notices it, and none needs a new silhouette to be legible.
The charging claim is worth the arithmetic. Seventy percent of a 118.5 kWh pack is about 83 kWh [3], and moving that much energy in 22 minutes is an average of roughly 226 kW [21], which is the figure that decides how long somebody stands at a motorway stop rather than the peak the 800-volt architecture can touch [6]. The quoted 137 miles in 10 minutes works out at about 42 percent of the 330-mile estimate [22], and 330 miles from 118.5 kWh is about 2.8 miles per kWh [23]. That range number is Range Rover's own real-world estimate [4], and it is worth remembering that fact before it lands in anyone's total-cost spreadsheet.
What teams tell themselves is that a new powertrain earns a new form, because the form is how a customer learns the product changed. What the customer at this price does is replace the vehicle they have with one that still reads as the same object to everyone who sees it. The visible redesign was doing narrative work rather than user work, and JLR appears to have priced the narrative below the unfamiliarity it charges the existing base.
The Verge reads this as automakers finally getting the memo and calls the sameness refreshing [20][1]. It is a review, and reviews are not demand signals. Orders have only just opened at £154,070 [11], and a car at that price says very little about what someone choosing a mass-market crossover wants from a shape.
The forcing function to take from it: for each item on a redesign list, name the moment a user notices it, then sort on two axes. Does the new mechanism change what the user does, and does the user's sense of the product ride on the old form? What doesn't exist is a single car in a customer's hands — and this is a programme that already promised deliveries once, in 2023, and missed. What one launch-day account cannot tell us is whether 330 miles survives a motorway in February, or whether 22 minutes survives a cold cabinet.
