watchOS 27 reassigns the Digital Crown double-click to a feature older watches cannot run

The feature that claimed the gesture runs on two watch models ^[7]. The change to the gesture went out to every watch that can install watchOS 27 ^[5]. The update landed four days before the hardware it favours reached buyers, and Live Rewind is not in the box with those watches either; it comes later this year ^[6][16]. Until it does, no Apple Watch has a Digital Crown double-click that does anything a single click does not already do ^[14].

What people used the double-click for was going back. It swapped between the current app and the last one used, or between the watch face and the last app ^[4]. MacRumors called it "a neat way of multitasking on your Apple Watch without tapping the display" ^[13]. On a screen that size I would rather have a control I can hit without looking than a target I have to aim at.

Apple has not shipped a setting that resolves this for either group of owners ^[9]. MacRumors wrote that owners of previous models are "simply out of luck in both senses, losing a useful function while also missing out on the new feature that usurps it" ^[10]. Apple could have kept the app switch, it argued, while offering an option to assign the double-click to Live Rewind for people who prefer it ^[11]. The same publication raised the case of a new Series 12 or Ultra 4 owner who wants nothing to do with Live Rewind and its privacy implications ^[12].

Two questions decide whether a gesture reassignment is safe to ship, and they make a 2x2 anyone doing this next quarter can fill in. First: can every device that receives the update use the new function? Second: does the displaced function keep another path a user can find? Both yes, ship it and write one line in the release notes. New function hardware-bound but the old one has an equivalent path, ship it and expect support tickets. Both no, and you have taken working behaviour from people who gained nothing, which is the cell watchOS 27 sits in for anyone on older hardware ^[5][7].

The fix that follows is to gate the reassignment on the hardware check rather than the OS version. The cost of that is real. One gesture then behaves two ways across a product line, so the support article has to open by asking which watch the reader owns and the documentation stops being a single sentence. The manual gets worse, and the person who updated their Series 9 keeps the shortcut they used daily. As it stands, MacRumors told its readers that "all we can do is provide feedback to Apple and hope the company hears enough demand for it to change course in watchOS 27.1 or a later update" ^[15].
