China's perler-bead craze opened about 2,250 stores in six months

Douyin put Gen Z group-buying orders for the craft up 9,018% over the Lunar New Year holiday, a count of orders on one platform, and QuestMobile's wider childlike-economy category has compounded at 20% a year since 2022.

What happened

  • Douyin's Lunar New Year holiday spending data, released on the 12th, showed Gen Z group-buying orders for perler beads up 9,018% from a year earlier, the fastest-growing category in the set.
  • The next fastest category on the same table was pet boarding services, up 348%.
  • More than 2,500 stores specializing in perler beads now operate across China, and 90% of them opened within the past six months.
  • QuestMobile's childlike-economy report, covering character toys, hands-on crafts, cards and dolls, put the market at 234.99 billion yuan in 2025 against 136.2 billion yuan in 2022.

Why it matters

  • constraint Douyin's 9,018% is order growth, so it cannot size a shift in household spending; anyone modelling trade-down has to find the money somewhere else.
  • contradiction The same craze is described at 9,018% by one platform's holiday window and at a projected 21% for 2026 by QuestMobile's category forecast, and the second is the one a revenue model can use.
  • decision Underwriting one of these stores means pricing a 40% repeat rate the operators report themselves, against a base where nine in ten sites have less than six months of trading history.
  • exposure The roughly 2,250 shops that opened this year bought stock ahead of any unified standard, so they carry whatever the eventual rules require of irons and pellets.

Ninety-one times the prior year's orders is what 9,018% describes, and pet boarding's second-place 348% is 4.5 times, so the gap between first and second is a factor of 20 [3][4]. Douyin ranked the categories by order growth and did not attach a yuan value to the perler-bead line [21].

The store count is the sturdier number. About 2,250 of the 2,500 shops opened inside six months, roughly 12 a day, which leaves about 250 that predate the boom [6]. Operators put repeat purchase at 40% [7]. That number comes from the operators, and no cohort of these stores has a full year of trading behind it [5].

Spread across 2,500 stores, QuestMobile's 234.99 billion yuan for 2025 would be about 94 million yuan each [13], so most of the category total sits in the character toys, cards and dolls it also counts [8]. The 2022-to-2025 move is 20% compounded [10]. The 2026 and 2027 projections work out at 21% and 18% growth [11], and the yuan added each year hardly changes: 49.35 billion, then 51.18 billion [12].

The comfort framing is older than the craze. Gunnar Knutsson designed the toy in Sweden in the 1970s as a rehabilitation aid against cognitive decline in older adults and isolation during winter [20]. en.sedaily.com attributed the current boom to young consumers seeking emotional comfort amid a tough job market and a slowing economy [14]. I would want the denominator before pricing that into a consumer name. iiMedia Research's 2026 survey puts buyers born between 1981 and 2009 at more than 90% of the market [15]; that is a count of who buys, and what those households gave up is a separate question. Hands-on craft content ranked first among comparable content categories in April, cited by 19.2% of adult users [16]. The second-fastest holiday category was pet boarding [2], which is not a comfort-craft purchase.

What would change my view: a second holiday window in which perler group buying compounds again off this base, or basket-level yuan data showing the same households cutting a comparable amount from higher-ticket categories.

The regulatory exposure is specific. China's State Administration for Market Regulation flagged online sellers that omitted age labelling and sold irons that failed low-temperature heating standards [17], and the Jiangsu Provincial Consumer Protection Committee advised that children under three should not use the products, that buyers choose safety-certified items, and that use stop if a strong odour is present when a package is opened [18]. No unified standard has been set [19]. When one is set it will apply to shops that have already bought their irons and their pellets [6].

What to watch

  • Douyin's next holiday spending release, and whether perler group buying compounds off this base or mean-reverts.
  • Whether a unified national safety standard adopts the low-temperature iron requirement the market regulator flagged.
  • QuestMobile's 2026 actual against its own 284.34 billion yuan projection for the childlike-economy category.
