OpenAI expands robotics hiring, with one engineer role paying up to $500,000
OpenAI has more than doubled its robotics listings since May and is hiring people to design joints, run test labs and handle the legal work. The published pay is the part rival recruiters will notice.

The top of the advertised band goes to a machine-learning engineer working on distributed data systems, the infrastructure that processes and moves large volumes of robotics training data across computers, at up to $500,000 in base pay [3]. The floor across the same set of listings is $177,000 [2]. So one team is advertising a spread of about 2.8 times, roughly $323,000, between its cheapest and most expensive open role, before equity [3]. Business Insider's review reports the band across all 27 postings and the ceiling on that one role; it does not break out what the actuator design engineers are offered [1][2].
Two different labour markets sit inside that band. Distributed data infrastructure is a software specialty already priced against every other frontier lab. The hardware side of the set is described in scope. Actuator design engineers build the motors and mechanisms that move a robot's joints [4]. There is also a lab technician to help "develop, build, test, and iterate on robotic systems" [5], and a lawyer dedicated to the robotics team [6]. Guy Hoffman, a Cornell mechanical and aerospace engineering professor who leads the university's Human-Robot Collaboration and Companionship Lab, reviewed all 27 postings for Business Insider and said OpenAI appears to be assembling a "custom robot design team" [9].
The change since May is a net 16 open roles, and the count has multiplied by about 2.5 [1][2]. I think the actuator and lab-technician openings are a decision to make parts in-house [4][5].
One posting would oversee OpenAI's "data collection facilities" [7]. Robots need examples of how people and machines interact with the physical world, and companies either generate that data themselves or buy it from outside vendors [8]. Hoffman also saw a limit in the set. "There is not a lot of electronics work sought, so I don't think there will be a focus on sensors beyond off-the-shelf cameras, microphones, and laser range finders," he said [10]. References to laser range finders and batteries "vaguely imply" an untethered mobile robot, he said, without indicating whether it would move on wheels or legs [11].
Sam Altman has been direct about the destination. "We will definitely do a humanoid," he told investor Alex Heath on the Sources podcast earlier this month, and said the company will do other form factors as well [12][13]. One listing says the team is focused on "unlocking general-purpose robotics and pushing towards AGI-level intelligence" and is exploring "a broad range of robotics form factors" [18]; another gives the long-term vision as "everyone having a personal robot doing anything they need" [19]. Altman has pointed to data centers as an early application [20]. OpenAI declined to comment [17].
For a leader setting next year's hiring plan, the evidence here is narrow and specific: one employer, 27 advertised roles, a band of $177,000 to $500,000 before equity, and a count that went from 11 since May [1][2]. Postings are budget authority and intent; filled seats and matched counteroffers are what would confirm a wider repricing. I would expect the pressure to land first on AI infrastructure pay, where the $500,000 sits, and only later on actuator and test engineering [3].
