Terrestrial Energy files the graphite methodology behind its seven-year core swap
Terrestrial Energy has asked the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve the method it uses to qualify graphite for its molten salt reactor core. Whatever the review supports sets the service life of a component the company plans to replace roughly every seven years.

The plant Terrestrial Energy wants to sell comes with the reactor core pulled out and replaced roughly every seven years, in sequence, through the plant's operating life [14]. According to chief executive Simon Irish, graphite performance ultimately determines the service life of the Core-unit [12].
The IMSR is graphite-moderated, with molten salt carrying both the fuel and the heat [4]. Graphite has moderated commercial reactors for decades, but its behaviour has to be demonstrated for each specific design [5]. So Terrestrial Energy runs a dedicated qualification program to establish that the graphite it has selected can perform under the conditions expected inside the Core-unit [6].
A consumable on a seven-year cycle also needs somebody to make it. The program has examined multiple nuclear graphite grades from multiple suppliers [8], and the regulatory filings are running alongside engineering, testing, supply-chain development and commercial planning [18].
Terrestrial Energy says approved topical reports establish foundational elements of the IMSR licensing basis that later applications can reference without the same technical issues being reevaluated [11]. Each report that clears takes an argument off the table before a plant license application is filed [24].
The plant at the end of all this is rated at 822 MWt of net thermal energy or 390 MWe of net electricity, or a customised combination of the two [16]. Divide the second by the first and net thermal efficiency is about 47 percent, which makes the heat rating roughly 2.1 times the electric one [19]. The 390 is the number that travels in headlines. No customer, site or data centre appears in the account [23].
The 2026 schedule does not add up cleanly in the account published by interestingengineering.com. The graphite report is described as the second of at least three topical reports expected this year [3], and the same piece says the company expects to submit at least three additional topical reports during 2026 [20]. One reading gives three filings for the year, the other at least four [21].
For anything pre-license, the sort a buyer can use is three-way: approved by the regulator, filed and under review, or not filed at all. The graphite qualification methodology moved into the middle category with this submission [1]. The plant license application is still in the third [24]. Terrestrial Energy plans its first commercial deployment in the early 2030s [17], and on a seven-year cycle the first replacement Core-unit falls due around the end of that decade [22].
