LinkedIn's platform data puts women at 20% of those hires and 18% of technical staff hires. The same figures show the biggest single pay step is the one into AI at all, worth $86,000 over the median for non-AI work.

The pay steps in LinkedIn's numbers are not spaced the way a job ladder is. An AI engineer hire takes a median $166,000, against $80,000 for non-AI work, a difference of $86,000 [1]. The move from that job up to head of AI, at a $236,000 median, adds $70,000 [2]. The typical AI role sits between them at $177,000 [7].

The senior title is also close to the best-paid individual contributor job. Head of AI at $236,000 is $37,000 above the $199,000 median for a forward deployed engineer, about 19% [3]. Both medians come out of the same platform data LinkedIn used to rank the 12 fastest-growing AI jobs [1].

Education explains a large share of the same spread. LinkedIn puts roughly $52,000 of median pay down to higher education [9], which is about 60% of the $86,000 that separates an AI engineer from the non-AI median [4]. More than 95% of hires into the three senior categories hold a bachelor's degree or better [8]. Fortune notes that major employers including Google and Apple have dropped degree requirements, while LinkedIn's data shows the credential still matters for AI work [10].

Women at 20% of head-of-AI hires means men took four in five [5]. Fortune's account reports gender as a share of hires and does not report the applicant pool or pay by gender [14], so the 20% describes the outcome without sizing the screen that produced it. Fortune also reports that women, and workers without four-year degrees, are landing in the lowest-paying roles with the lowest barriers to entry, such as data annotation [12].

The LinkedIn report, quoted by Fortune, said: "AI is often described as a force that democratizes expertise. Yet today's AI labor market appears increasingly concentrated among workers with higher levels of formal education, especially in the highest-paying occupations." [11]

Two readings fit these medians. In one, the $86,000 entry gap is a scarcity price for people who can ship AI systems, and it narrows as supply arrives. In the other, some of the premium is a titling convention, existing engineering work relabeled and then counted as an AI hire. Supply is arriving at the entry point first: Gen Z already holds more than two-thirds of hires into AI engineer and forward deployed engineer roles [6], and the report calls the newer AI roles a "strong entry point" for younger workers [13]. I would expect compression to show in the $166,000 median before the $236,000 one. If next year's cut has AI engineer pay climbing toward the $199,000 forward deployed figure while the non-AI median stays near $80,000, that expectation is wrong and the entry premium is durable.
