Korea routes 120 draft-exempt AI researchers a year into Samsung and LG labs from 2027

Divide 120 places among the nine recommended institutes and each lab takes about 13 researchers an intake ^[1]. The appointments run three years, so the four companies would hold roughly 360 exempted researchers at the same time once the 2029 cohort arrives ^[2]. The ministry's step is a recommendation of designated employers, covering LG Electronics, HD Hyundai Robotics, Samsung Medison and Samsung Electronics ^[1].

The two briefings differ on the denominator. The version written for new hires describes 240 AI specialized research personnel across the three years from 2027 through 2029, with 120 a year going to large-company labs ^[5]. But 120 a year for three years is 360, more than the 240 total it gives ^[4]. The version written for students and job seekers puts it as 120 of 240 each year ^[6]. That makes 720 places over the window and 360 of them, half, at the four companies ^[3].

The 2013 suspension was there to protect research and development staff at smaller firms ^[7]. Neither briefing says whether the 120 AI places are additional or taken from the allocation that non-large employers have had to themselves since then. Analysts quoted in both accounts put the revival down to career interruptions and science and engineering talent going abroad ^[8].

LG's other recruiting channel has a published cost. The top three teams at its hackathon shared 10 million won ^[11], about 3.3 million won a team ^[6] and about 2,947 won for every person who entered ^[5]. Winners skip the document screening stage when they apply to LG ^[11]. Four affiliates, LG AI Research, LG Electronics, LG Uplus and LG CNS, ran a recruitment fair alongside the event ^[13]. More than 23,000 people have been through the program since 2022 ^[12].

I expect the exemption to move more researchers than the contest, because one is a three-year posting at a named employer ^[3] and the other is a waived screening stage ^[11]. The counter-case is size: 120 a year spread across nine institutes is a small intake ^[4][1]. The larger effect may land on where science and engineering graduates apply in 2026, the consequence the briefing emphasises ^[9]. Watch the allocation to everyone else in 2027. If the non-large-company number rises alongside the 120, nobody is displaced and this is an expansion of the program; if it is flat, the 120 came out of it.
