Meta gave Muse Charm its own 5G modem so its AI agent can work without Wi-Fi
Meta's new pocket device opens its Muse agent with one tap and reaches the network over a 5G modem of its own. The modem is what lets an assistant stop inheriting Apple's and Google's app rules.

What happened
- Zuckerberg took repeated digs at Apple at Meta Connect before revealing Muse Charm, a pocket-watch-sized device that opens Meta's Muse agent on a tap and bypasses the AI apps on a user's smartphone.

Why it matters

The 5G modem changes the architecture. The published report says the built-in modem gives access to Muse even without Wi-Fi, and that the device cannot make calls [8]. An assistant that ships as an app inherits its host operating system: background execution limits, microphone permission prompts, store review. A device with its own radio inherits none of that. Meta has spent years trying to get out from under Apple's and Google's operating systems with a platform of its own [3].
What exists in public is one wire story's worth of specification. The Ukrainian outlet mezha.net credits Reuters for its version [16], and both published accounts carry the same screen size, the same modem and the same tap gesture, so every figure in circulation traces to a single report [17]. Meta did not disclose a price or an availability date [18]. Until there is an SDK, I would treat Charm as one endpoint with one tenant.
IDC director Jitesh Ubrani said of the device: "They might be able to run a small language model locally. So you can run AI on such a small package" [13]. The local-model idea is Ubrani's inference from the form factor. It decides the failure mode. If the model runs in the cloud, every tap is a round trip, and cellular coverage becomes a hard product requirement.
The nearest precedent is Rabbit R1, the handheld generative AI device from Rabbit Inc with a screen and a button, which had a buzzy launch in early 2024 and then flopped; the same account attributes the flop to overpromising on AI features and delivering an unreliable experience [15]. Meta's investor case for Muse is automation of tasks ranging from booking flights to filing taxes [11]. Those are jobs where the user can see whether the agent finished.
Linda Sui, founder of the market research firm Smart Analytics Global, is cautious on volume. "I would be cautious about its mass-market potential," Sui said. "Unless Muse Charm can offer unique functions that smartphones, watches, earbuds or smart glasses cannot easily replace, it is more likely to remain a nice-to-have device for early adopters than become a mainstream product" [14].
What to watch
- A published SDK or agent API for Charm, which would turn a single-tenant endpoint into something a third party can ship to.
- Whether Meta states what runs on the device, and how Muse behaves when the 5G link is unavailable.
- A price, a ship date, and who pays for the modem's data.
