Loft Orbital takes its AI constellation from 10 satellites to 50 with Mistral on board
Loft Orbital and Marlan Space put 40 more satellites behind a $1bn figure that four outlets describe four different ways. What a customer buys is a slot on a shared satellite running a model picked from an app store.

What happened
- Loft Orbital and Marlan Space said on 9 September they will grow their AI-equipped constellation from 10 satellites to 50, with Mistral supplying the models that run on board.
- The release says the satellites carry radar and optical sensors, analyse what they see in orbit and send results in seconds, where conventional systems downlink imagery and process it on the ground over hours.
- The companies called the $1bn a programme, Sifted reported a signed contract between the two firms, and Bloomberg reported a consortium plan to invest, three accounts of one number.
- Orbitworks, the 2024 joint venture between the two companies, will build the satellites in Abu Dhabi's KEZAD zone; the first 10 are in production and Bloomberg reported the first flies in early October on a SpaceX rocket.

Why it matters
- contradiction Sifted's signed contract and Bloomberg's plan to invest support different decisions. One is money Loft Orbital can build against today; the other is an intention held by an investor consortium.
- constraint A promise of results in seconds only covers the answer. Any workflow that needs the underlying frame for review or evidence is on a downlink schedule nobody has described.
- exposure French, European and UAE government users would task the same shared satellites, so priority during a maritime or missile-warning event becomes a contract term, and the release does not describe how it is set.
- decision Buying a model slot on somebody else's spacecraft means accepting their revisit rate, their chip and their model lifecycle, so evaluation looks like buying a shared service.
Forty of Altair's 50 satellites do not exist yet [27][6]. Spread across a $1bn programme, that is about $25m per new spacecraft [28], and none of the coverage splits the figure into satellites, launch, ground segment or model licences. Sifted reported that Orbitworks, the joint venture that will build them, was set up to make up to 50 satellites a year [15]. The whole build fits inside a year of that stated capacity [29].
The fourth description of the money is the most specific about where it starts. Peter B. de Selding of Space Intel Report reported that the $1bn comes from Royal Group of Abu Dhabi [5]. Marlan Space is a UAE investor and a subsidiary of IHC, the Abu Dhabi holding company [24], and Via Satellite reported that IHC bought an 80% stake in Marlan Space on 8 September [25], the day before the announcement [31]. A customer signing a multi-year data subscription has to know which of those entities is on the paper.
What a customer buys is narrower than the $1bn. They pick AI models from an application store and run them on shared satellites [8]. Mistral supplies the onboard models for reasoning and natural-language tasking, and powers services in the store [9]. The Paris company announced a 3bn euro Series D round the day before the satellite deal [10].
The public evidence for running those models in orbit is a demonstration and a count. Loft Orbital says it has flown more than 100 payloads and 20 AI missions, one of them a demonstration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory of a satellite running a vision-language model on board [18]. On the hardware the material goes no further: no per-satellite compute figure, no power budget, no radiation tolerance [32]. Bloomberg reported that the satellites use Nvidia chips, with components from suppliers around the world [13].
The first applications listed are maritime domain awareness, wildfire detection, disaster response and the security of ports and critical infrastructure, for government users in France, Europe and the UAE plus commercial customers worldwide [19]. Sifted reported uses ranging from detecting missile threats to protecting energy infrastructure [20]. Orbitworks expects the imagery to focus on defence and security, according to Bloomberg [21]. Hamdullah Mohib, chief executive of Marlan Space and Orbitworks, said the uses could widen. "I would imagine that this would grow very fast into emergency applications," he said [22].
Start with whether the decision can be made from a model's answer without the frame behind it. Wildfire detection can act on an alert. A port security review will want the pixels, and the release does not say whether the imagery behind an onboard answer comes down at all [33]. Then there is which supplier owes the result: Loft Orbital provides the platforms, onboard AI, software and constellation operations [23], while BlackSky supplies the high-resolution optical satellites and its chief executive, Brian O'Toole, said BlackSky was proud to be "the highest-resolution optical provider on this program" [11][12].
What to watch
- Whether MaiaSpace, named by Via Satellite as preferred launch provider, actually flies any of the 40 new satellites after the first goes up on SpaceX.
- Any filing or statement from Loft Orbital that confirms a signed $1bn contract rather than a programme value.
- Whether the application store lists third-party models, and how often models can be swapped once a satellite is in orbit.
