Kojima Productions shopped PHYSINT for three months before Sony announced the split
PlayStation Studios told Kojima Productions in mid-June that it intended to cancel PHYSINT. Sony's public post came on September 10, after the studio had already found a new publisher in Xbox. The studio says it is profitable.

What happened
- Sony said in a September 10 post on X that it had decided to step away from PHYSINT, the action-espionage game it announced alongside Kojima Productions in 2024.
- Reports published after the announcement said Sony's concerns covered PHYSINT's budget, missed deadlines, potential profitability and its lack of permanent PlayStation exclusivity.
- The studio said it is in a healthy, profitable state, that PHYSINT development continues with Xbox, and that its relationship with PlayStation remains strong.

Why it matters
- constraint The private notice starts the clock for a studio funded by one platform holder. Kojima Productions had about twelve weeks of it and used the whole window to place the game elsewhere.
- contradiction The part a studio lead would most want to learn from, the budget and exclusivity terms, rests entirely on unnamed people, and the developer is telling its own fans to discount it.
- decision Anyone pitching a single-funder project now has to price the cancellation case in advance: which second party could publish it, and whether payroll survives the search.
- precedent A cancelled first-party project landing with the competing platform holder inside three months makes that fallback expectable the next time a studio negotiates exclusivity.
Someone at Kojima Productions spent the summer keeping a team on a game whose publisher had already said it was leaving. PlayStation Studios told the studio in mid-June that it intended to cancel PHYSINT, and Sony's post went up on September 10 [2][1]. Count from June 15 and the gap is about twelve weeks [12]. The studio says it used roughly three months to look for a new publishing partner, and reached an agreement with Xbox [3].
The reasons for Sony's exit are single-sourced and disputed. Reports published shortly after the announcement said Sony had concerns about PHYSINT's budget, missed deadlines, potential profitability and its lack of permanent PlayStation exclusivity [4]. The same reporting cited people familiar with the project on the commercial performance of Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2 as a major factor [5]. Kojima Productions pushed back on the sourcing and the substance together. "None of the claims written came from any official or on-the-record source, and as such we encourage you to take them with a dose of scepticism," the studio said [6].
The 2024 announcement was a named collaboration between a platform holder and a marquee creator [1]. The development agreement underneath it let the funder end the project mid-build. Kojima Productions called losing PlayStation as publisher a "serious situation" that could have had major consequences for the company [8]. Kojima told the Washington Post he was "shocked and surprised" when Sony pulled its funding, and that he initially feared for the future of the studio [9].
What mattered in a window like that was whether the studio could carry payroll through the search on its own money, and whether a second party could say yes inside the window, and want the thing partly because the current funder dropped it. Kojima Productions had both. It says it is in a "healthy, profitable state" and that development continues with Xbox [7].
The studio explained why it spoke at all. The claims, it said, "have reached beyond the studio and have touched our fans, our creative partners, and colleagues we have worked alongside with for three decades" [11]. Hiring pipelines and co-development partners read cancellation stories, and three months of silence is a long time to let one set. On Sony, Kojima said: "We're not in dispute. We're not fighting with them." [10]
What to watch
- Whether Sony or Kojima Productions puts the budget, schedule and exclusivity terms on the record, since every version now circulating is attributed to unnamed people.
- Whether Xbox states a release window or platform terms for PHYSINT, which would show what it agreed to that Sony would not.
- Any Sony disclosure of Death Stranding sales, which would test the unnamed claim that the franchise's performance drove the cancellation.
