Apple splits its iPhone software line to keep iOS 27.1 for the Duo alone
The iPhone Duo goes on sale on October 23 running iOS 27.1, a build Apple is keeping to that one phone while every other iPhone moves to 27.2 in October. The two branches rejoin at 27.2.x or 27.3.

What happened
- Apple released iOS 27 on September 14 and started beta testing iOS 27.2 two days later, on September 16.

Why it matters
- constraint A minimum deployment target of iOS 27.2 excludes Apple's newest phone, so a version floor stops working as shorthand for "anything recent enough" during the fork.

On October 23 somebody unboxes an iPhone Duo and the software version reads iOS 27.1 [3]. The iPhone 17 on the same desk is on its way to 27.2, which 9to5Mac expects in October [6].
You can work out the late end of that date. Apple promised Siri AI in new languages during October, and French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish are in the 27.2 beta, so the update has to land before November [6][7]. October 23 to October 31 is eight days [12].
Release calendars assume hardware and software move together, that the newest device runs the newest build, and that a minimum deployment target set at the current version is therefore safe on the flagship. iOS 27.1 breaks the ordering. 27.1 is lower than 27.2, so a Duo fails any check written as "iOS 27.2 or later" until the branches rejoin [13]. 9to5Mac puts that convergence at either an iOS 27.2.x update or 27.3 [5], and wrote that "things will be awkward for a little bit, but everything will eventually return to normal" [14].
A test matrix gains a row for 27.1 on exactly one device, and 9to5Mac says that build is full of references to the Duo which Apple wants out of sight until the phone ships [4]. A wide developer seed of 27.1 would be a surprise on those terms.
9to5Mac lists what is in 27.2 and says nothing about 27.1 [15]. Profiles arrive in the Apple TV app on iPhone for the first time in 27.2, several years after tvOS got them [8]. Dual Capture on Group FaceTime already needs an iPhone 17 or later plus every participant running iOS 27 [9], so feature availability was a hardware check joined to a version check before the fork existed.
Apple's numbering is a loose guide to contents anyway. The redesigned Health app is in the 27.2 beta, with Insights, Longevity and Browse tabs and a Health age readout built from Apple Watch data [10], and 9to5Mac expects it to ship later in the year instead of with 27.2 next month [11].
For anything you ship after October 23, sort each version-gated code path into two columns. Column one is gated on a number: OS at or above 27.2. Column two is gated on whether the capability answers at runtime. Column two does not care which branch the phone is on. Column one does not run on the most expensive iPhone Apple sells, from the day 27.2 ships until convergence [13][5].
Whether that costs you anything depends on whether a launch-week Duo buyer is in the cohort you built the feature for. If your retention curve and your usage depth live on three-year-old hardware and mid-tier plans, the fork is a footnote and you wait for 27.3 [5]. If your paying users are the people who queue on day one, column one is where this costs you.
What to watch
- Whether iOS 27.1's release notes list the TV app profiles and the five new Siri AI languages, which would show how far behind the Duo branch starts.
- Whether convergence lands at an iOS 27.2.x update or slips to 27.3.
- Whether Apple seeds a 27.1 beta to developers before October 23, given the unreleased-device references 9to5Mac describes in that code.
