Apple's rebuilt Health app lands in the iOS 27.2 beta with its guidance layer switched off
Health and fitness teams can install the redesign this week, and the Apple Intelligence advice the rebuild is built around is missing from the beta, so what they can measure is Apple's layout and its metric views.

What happened
- Apple's developer notes say the redesigned Health app is being tested in the first iOS 27.2 beta and will not be in that release's launch version, arriving later in the year instead.
- CNET says lab ordering, personalized health information in the Insights tab and personalized recommendations are all unavailable until later in the year, with features rolling out progressively.
- The new Apple Watch models compute a 0 to 10 readiness score from recent activity, vitals and sleep score, reported to the user as Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It.
- A new Longevity tab grades seven areas including metabolic health, hearing and nutrition, and shows how each metric is classified against the latest clinical guidance.
- Apple plans to let US users order a Quest bloodwork panel covering more than 50 biomarkers for $119 from inside the Health app.

Why it matters
- constraint The question a rival health team needs settled, whether Apple's guidance beats theirs, cannot be answered from this beta at all.
- decision Anyone selling a recovery score subscription has to decide whether to keep charging for a number the new watch hardware computes free.
- exposure In-app ordering puts Apple in the referral path for US bloodwork, and the biomarkers come back into a reading Apple computes.
- precedent Shipping a feature in a beta while excluding it from that release's launch build means "in the beta" stops implying "in the update" for iOS point releases.
This rebuild is designed for someone who wears the watch to bed. Vitals now splits into overnight and daytime views and adds HRV as both an overall and a recovery measure [6], and Health Age reads sleep alongside VO2 max, resting heart rate, HRV and biomarkers from blood work [8]. Charge the watch overnight and several of the new readings lose their inputs [16].
For a developer, the interesting part of any first-party health app is the quality of the advice. MacRumors describes Apple's own example: a user working on cardio might see a suggestion to incorporate intervals into a morning run, with recommendations adapting to each user and their data [14]. That layer is the part held back. What installs today shows how Apple arranges a health app, not how well Apple Intelligence reads a person's data [13].
The readiness number appears in three places at once: on the watch, in the Fitness app, and in the Health app's Insights tab [15]. Apple is building the collection side too. An at-home VO2 max test uses the iPhone camera to track movement while a trainer gives instructions, with further assessments for flexibility, strength, balance and movement mechanics [9]. The blood work half is a purchase: a complete Health Age for a US user needs biomarkers, and the only in-app source Apple has described is the $119 Quest panel [12].
Apple's developer notes do not give a date beyond later in the year [2]. So the planning has to be done against capability, not calendar. Sort each feature you were going to build on two axes: whether Apple now computes the same number itself, and whether this beta lets you judge how good Apple's version is.
Where Apple computes nothing, keep building; nutrition entry and multi-week coaching are outside the seven categories Apple grades in Longevity [7]. Where Apple computes it and you can check the output, decide now whether you drop the feature or wrap Apple's number in something it does not do. Readiness scoring and personalized guidance sit in the awkward box, computed by Apple and invisible to you, and the workable plan there is to keep shipping and decide again when the build that reaches users lands.
What to watch
- Whether Apple names a version or a date for the Health app release once iOS 27.2 goes final.
- Whether the $119 price or the 50-biomarker scope of the Quest panel changes when US ordering opens.
- Whether third-party apps can read readiness and Health Age values, or only see them in Apple's own tabs.
