Planning for Meta's VR glasses means planning around a three-hour pocket puck
The glasses Meta ships in Spring 2027 weigh about 100 grams because compute and battery moved to a tethered puck rated for up to three hours of high-resolution playback. Every launch partner Meta named sells video or live sport.

What happened
- The glasses hold the sensors and display while a puck on an optical tether carries compute, battery and storage and clips to a pocket or bag, and Meta says the pair ships in Spring 2027.
- Meta calls the glasses five times lighter than Quest 3, built in magnesium alloy, with open sides and a passthrough camera so the wearer keeps a view of the room.
- The puck's battery is rated for up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback with 45W fast charging, and the device runs Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Reality Elite processor.

Why it matters
- constraint A shared-device pool built on this hardware has to schedule charging around a three-hour ceiling, and each user now has two objects to issue, track and dock instead of one.
- decision Any 2027 XR content plan written for controllers needs a call this year on whether the app works on gaze, hands and voice or has to be rebuilt before spring.
- cost Support absorbs the tether: a cable between the head and a pocket is a new failure point and a new thing to explain to a user who took the puck out of their pocket.
- contradiction Meta's own summary names a console, and the launch partners it named sell films and live sport, so a buyer weighing this for gaming cannot price it off the post.
Put the puck in a pocket, sit down, start a film. Then get up to answer the door. Meta says the open sides and passthrough camera keep you aware of what is happening nearby [11], and the puck clips to a pocket or a bag [3], so the trip to the door is made with a cable running from temple to waist.
The cable is why the glasses can weigh about 100 grams [2]. Five times lighter than Quest 3 [4] puts Quest 3 near 500 grams [5], so roughly 400 grams comes off the face and goes into a pocket instead [22]. The puck's weight and price are not in Meta's announcement post [21].
Meta describes the device as "a cinema, courtside seat, workspace, and console, all in a pair of glasses that weigh about 100 grams" [19]. The partners it named are in the video business: Disney+ streaming Marvel titles in 3D from November in select countries [13], VR Enhanced versions of Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope in a Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM app at launch [14], ESPN with 8K 180-degree immersive sports [18], and a TV app carrying Prime Video, YouTube, DIRECTV and others, with Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ opening their 3D catalogs for the first time [15]. Workspace gets one sentence in the post, about a portable, private screen during a long flight [20].
The specification aimed at that sentence is the display. Meta claims 37 pixels per degree on micro-OLED panels behind ultra-compact pancake lenses, and calls it great for text legibility [6].
The three-hour playback rating is the number a rollout has to sit inside [8]. Two feature films back to back do not fit in three hours, and a work shift does not either.
This device is for the person in a seat for under three hours who wants a bigger screen than the one in the seat back, and who is content steering by voice, eyes and hand gestures, because there are no controllers and the Meta AI agent sits in the operating system [9]. Everything else turns on whether the session ends inside three hours, and whether the interface still works with no controller in the user's hand. Answer yes to both and the spring hardware belongs in the plan. Nothing in this announcement changes either one: the battery is three hours and the input is eyes, hands and voice.
What to watch
- Whether Disney's November 3D rollout on Disney+ reaches markets beyond the select countries Meta named.
- Whether Meta discloses the puck's weight and a price; the launch post has neither.
- Whether the James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision 'first time in 3D' titles land before or after the spring launch.
