Hyundai drives its own autonomy stack through Gwanghwamun on eight cameras and one radar

Hyundai has released the first road footage of Atria AI, the self-driving platform it is building in-house, driving hands-off in Seoul traffic. Cars carrying it are due in mass production in the second half of 2029.

What happened

  • Hyundai Motor Group released the first footage shown to outside audiences of a software-defined vehicle running Atria AI, the self-driving platform it is developing in-house, on city streets.
  • The test car was built on the Ioniq 6, fitted with eight cameras and one radar, and driven on public roads at Level 2++, which permits hands-off driving under driver supervision.
  • It drove around Seoul's Gwanghwamun area, the Olympic Expressway and the Gyeongbu Expressway, avoiding vehicles and pedestrians in congested signalled sections and in narrow alleys with poor visibility.

Why it matters

Park Min-woo is president and head of the AVP Division at Hyundai Motor and Kia and chief executive of 42dot. He gave technological completeness as the reason cars with the in-house platform will not reach mass production until 2029 [10]. "Where we need to go is a complete north star, the ultimate goal," Park said [11]. "If we rush into mass production, we could end up mass-producing a half-baked Level 2++ that is far from that" [12]. The report is dated 13 September and puts the media day on the 11th [13]; from there to the start of the second half of 2029 is about 34 months [17].

The test car is an Ioniq 6 with eight cameras and one radar [4]. Nine sensors [16]. If that is the set that ships, it is the hardware content Hyundai pays for on every car carrying the platform [3]. Anything added during validation lands on a mass-market bill of materials. The media day account did not cover cost per vehicle, test mileage or a comparison with a supplier's system [18].

Twenty SDV test beds and forty data-collection cars run on a permanent basis [8]: sixty vehicles [14], two collectors for every test bed [15]. The group describes that fleet as how it builds its ability to handle edge cases [8].

Park's title is itself a statement about allocation. He runs the AVP Division at both Hyundai Motor and Kia and is chief executive of 42dot [10]. Two brands wait on one team's schedule. Until the second half of 2029 [3], that team's visible output is test beds, data cars and validation runs [8].

The footage shows supervised driving. The car slowed to keep a safe distance when another vehicle cut in abruptly, recognized right-turn-only signals that ordinary drivers can find confusing, and entered unprotected left turns without disrupting the flow of traffic [7].

The date could slip past the second half of 2029 [3], and Hyundai would sell hands-off driving in the meantime on hardware and software it bought in. Or the date holds, the feature ships, and few buyers option it. I would price the second risk higher. Level 2++ extends to complex urban and ordinary road sections, and the driver supervises throughout [5].

What to watch
