Samsung cut 75 grams over seven years to put its foldable under its non-folding flagship
Samsung's mechanical R&D chief tells WIRED that weight is the entire game in foldables, and his phone is now lighter than the company's own slab flagship. The grams came out of the camera and the dust seal.

What happened
- Samsung has taken 75 grams out of its main folding phone in the seven years since the original Fold, according to Hee-Cheul Moon, who runs the company's Advanced Mechanical R&D Group.
- Preorders for Samsung's latest folding handsets rose 30 percent globally against last year's models, and the smaller passport-shaped Fold8 accounted for nearly half of them.
- At 201 grams the Fold8 now undercuts Samsung's own non-folding Galaxy S26 Ultra, which weighs 214 grams.

Why it matters

The comparison that decides this category happens in a shop, one phone in each hand, before anyone opens an app. Thirteen grams separate them [1], and that gap is what Samsung has been buying for seven years.
Work the 75 grams backwards [2] and the first Fold sat at about 276 grams [2], which is roughly 10.7 grams a year [3]. Samsung says it went through about 270 components and more than 180 auxiliary parts across the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra [11], deleted 15 of those auxiliary parts, under nine percent of them [4], machined the internal display support plate to about 0.2 mm and relaid the circuit board to drop unused circuits [12]. Holding a plate that thin flat took a titanium alloy film Samsung calls Flex Titanium, about a third the width of a human hair, meant to stop the crease deepening over years of folding [13]. Honor and Google have been thinning their foldables on the same clock [19].
The demand-side evidence is thinner than the engineering. What Samsung has published is a 30 percent global rise in preorders and a Fold8 share of nearly half [5]. A preorder is stated intent with a deposit attached, a different measure from retention or usage depth, and no price for either model appears in the account, so some of that near-half share may be the cheaper model doing what cheaper models do. The firmer number sits on the objection side: Samsung says its own customer data and 2024 YouGov research found bulk was the chief concern among people who had no interest in foldables [10]. Weight as a purchase blocker is a well-supported claim, separate from the claim that weight makes the phone better to live with, which is the one teams tend to assume they have already proved.
Two concessions paid for the grams, and they do not cost the same thing. The Fold8 gives up its telephoto and reserves zoom and the 200-megapixel sensor for the Fold8 Ultra [14]. The series also stays at IP48 while most slab flagships are at IP68, so water is survivable and dust is not [15], and WIRED notes dust has already forced Samsung to delay a launch once [16].
So sort concessions by how often a user meets them. Weight and shape pay out on every pick-up, while the missing telephoto shows up on a known subset of shots and the buyer who minds can be pointed at the Ultra. Dust ingress arrives rarely and takes the whole device with it. That is the table worth filling in before signing off a form-factor cut: how often the benefit is felt, how often the loss is felt, and who is holding the phone when the loss happens. When the loss is rare but terminal and it lands on someone who did not choose the device, the cost has simply moved from the buyer who saved the grams to whoever inherits the risk.
Hee-Cheul Moon, who runs Samsung's Advanced Mechanical R&D Group and spoke to WIRED with smartphone R&D head Seungki Choi [1], calls the new competition absolutely welcome [4] and says the whole game is the weight of the device [3]. That is a scoreboard he is currently leading. The rumoured iPhone Ultra at 230 to 241 grams [8] would sit 29 to 40 grams above the Fold8 [5], and at the top of that range 8 grams above the iPhone 17 Pro Max at 233 grams [9][6]. Apple's entrant is expected in the same passport shape with a similar camera setup [17]. If it also ships heavier and no better sealed, its case has to rest on something other than the metric Samsung's engineers have spent seven years and 75 grams claiming.
What to watch
- Whether the next Fold hinge reaches IP68, the one change that takes dust off a fleet buyer's risk list.
- Sell-through and return rates for Fold8 against Fold8 Ultra, since preorder share is all Samsung has published.
