GPS collars in Namibia and Botswana catch male lions closing the distance on hyenas
A four-year tracking study of 17 lions and 14 spotted hyenas found hyenas consistently moving away and male lions consistently moving toward them, a correction to the scavenging story that rests on ten tracked pairs.

Why it matters
- capability Scoring both animals' direction at the same instant makes a dominance claim testable without anyone present at the encounter, which is the condition under which almost all of this behavior happens.
- constraint The simultaneity rule that makes the test clean also caps how much data survives it, so the lion sex difference cannot be settled by this cohort no matter how many fixes it contains.
- contradiction Barker's colleagues read the same animals as hyenas following lions for food; the collars adjudicate who closes distance in proximity, not who ends up eating, so the older reading is narrowed rather than retired.

The measurement primitive is what makes this work. For every instant when a collared lion and a collared hyena both had a fix, each animal was scored as moving toward the other, away from it, or off to the side [6]. That scoring needs no human at the encounter, which matters for animals that range over huge territories at night, across terrain no vehicle handles well [1]. It is also symmetric: both animals are scored the same way at the same moment, so the answer to who closes the distance falls out of the geometry rather than out of which species the observer happened to be following [6].
Then the denominator. Fixes every five minutes give twelve paired locations for every hour two collared animals overlap [16], so thousands of scored interactions [5] accumulate from a modest number of animals: 31 collars in all [18], 23 simultaneously tracked pairs, ten of them a lion and a hyena [5], about 43 percent of the dyads [15]. The unit carrying the statistical weight is closer to ten than to thousands, and Barker says as much. The collared sample was small, and restricting the analysis to moments when both animals had a fix is the rigorous choice precisely because it throws data away [11].
That is why the two results deserve different confidence. Hyena retreat held across three independent statistical tests, which is what lets Barker call it a repeatable behavioral pattern [8]. The sex difference among lions does not have that backing; she labels the finer-scale findings trends rather than firm conclusions [10], and her field impression that females varied with which pride members were present [9] is the kind of observation a larger collared cohort either confirms or dissolves.
One design detail shapes what the finding generalizes to. Collars went to higher-ranking animals in each pride and clan, chosen because they were least likely to disperse from their territory [12]. Sound for data retention. It also means the movement signature belongs to established residents in the two national parks and one conservancy where the work was done [7], not to dispersers or animals on unfamiliar ground.
The thing this does not tell you is why the lions close the distance, or what happened when they got there. Direction of travel between two points is not motive, and it is not a carcass outcome. The long-standing reading, that hyenas shadow lions for scraps [17], is a claim about finding food; this analysis is a claim about proximity. Both can hold if they run on different scales, with hyenas giving ground when a lion is near and arriving later at what it left. What the collars change is narrower than an inversion and more useful. Barker's own observation of lions tracking hyenas, made during her master's fieldwork on brown hyenas, had been dismissed by senior researchers as a series of chance encounters [3]; it now rests on paired movement records rather than on who happened to be watching.
What to watch
- A larger collared cohort of lions of both sexes, which would either confirm the male-female difference or dissolve it as small-sample noise.
- Whether the paired-collar method is extended to other carnivore guild members, which Barker says would take resources she does not have.
- Any follow-up that links the movement scoring to carcass-level outcomes, the part of the scavenging claim this design does not test.
