The latch took Tom's Guide's reviewer a second to find on the pre-production unit, and then the back lifted off cleanly, with the battery connector and the M.2 slot sitting where someone with no training would think to look [11]. That is the part of this machine a support queue can genuinely use: the two swaps that kill most laptops are a dead battery and a full or failed SSD, and both are now a latch away.
Everything above that line works differently. Acer told Tom's Guide that the processor upgrade and the I/O board swap are jobs Acer does [7]. The daughterboards come out with two screws [5], but the hands on the screwdriver belong to the vendor. The pitch is modularity, and the practice underneath it is a service relationship, built on better-designed internals.
The arithmetic that decides whether this is worth £1,599 [2] runs on the upgrade promise. The chassis ships with Intel's Core Ultra Series 3 [1] and is committed to two further generations [3], which is three processor generations of life in one shell [1], or roughly £533 of purchase price per generation [2]. That figure only means anything if the upgrade actually goes on sale and costs meaningfully less than the gap to a new machine, and Tom's Guide's hands-on does not carry an upgrade price [14].
The ports are the tell on how far the modularity goes. You get an SD slot, Thunderbolt 4, USB-A and HDMI 2.1, and Acer has no plans to offer different port configurations [5][6]. Removable I/O here is a fix for a broken port, not a way to choose your own. Framework still lets you swap out more of the internals yourself [13].
This machine is built for a buyer who isn't cross-shopping a MacBook Air or an XPS at the same money [10], because that buyer reads a spec sheet, and on the sheet this reads as a 2800x1800 120Hz HDR OLED [8] in a 1.56 kg body [4] with a bit of keyboard deck flex [12], specced as high as a Core Ultra X9 388H with 32GB [9]. Repairability does not appear in that comparison until year four.
The forcing function comes down to two factors: who performs the work, you or Acer, and how long the machine stays in service, three years or six. The premium only returns in the long-hold column. Inside that column, if your own techs do the work, you collect the battery and SSD wins immediately; if you depend on the vendor, you are buying a promise whose parts network does not exist yet and whose price is unpublished. For a three-year hold, £1,599 buys a brighter panel and a lighter body, and the repairability sits in a column you never reach.

The latch, the battery connector, the M.2 slot and the flexing keyboard deck were physically checked by Tom's Guide, and that is worth something. But the promise carrying the whole story, two generations of Intel CPU in a socketed chassis, is a statement Acer made in a briefing about hardware that will not be for sale for sixteen months, with no price and no parts channel behind it. Nobody outside Acer has verified an upgrade because no upgrade exists yet.
Nothing shipped, nothing serviced
There are no owners to learn from. The units in hand were pre-production, retail is Q1 2027, and the first real processor swap on this chassis is at least two Intel generations away. What we have is a preview, not a deployment.
The teardown is real; the end of throwaway PCs is not yet
Tom's Guide's own detail undercuts its framing, which is to the reporting's credit and against the headline. A repair you post back to the manufacturer, at an unstated price, on ports you cannot reconfigure, arriving in 2027, is closer to an extended service plan than to the modular future. Our own arithmetic runs the same risk: £533 a generation only holds if the upgrades are cheap, and nobody has said they are.
Preview access on one side, a repositioned eco-brand on the other
This is early access converted into copy, on a consumer site that closes by asking readers to make it a preferred source and points them onward to more of its own reviews. Acer's motive is equally legible: the Vero line needed to stop feeling like recycled plastic penance, and hand-openability is what justifies MacBook Air pricing for it. None of that makes the latch less solid. It does explain why an unpriced future service becomes the killer app.
Trust the hands, discount the calendar
Confident that the machine opens as described and that the panel and silicon are as specced. Much less confident about anything dated 2027: pre-production hardware changes, prices move, US pricing does not exist yet, and a two-generation upgrade commitment from a mainstream OEM has no track record to lean on.
