Meta wants Muse reading your email and running your Mac

At Connect, Mark Zuckerberg and Alexandr Wang gave Meta's three-week-old agent its own email address, a face for video calls and control of desktop apps. The open question for anyone trying it is what it can reach.

What happened

  • Mark Zuckerberg opened Meta's annual Connect keynote in Menlo Park on Wednesday with Muse, the personal agent Meta launched in early September, as the centrepiece of the company's consumer AI pitch.
  • Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang said Muse is getting its own email address, available "soon", with no more precise timeline given for the feature.
  • Zuckerberg said Muse will be free for a huge number of tokens and that Meta expects to profit over time by taking a small fee from transactions.

Why it matters

  • decision Whoever tries Muse has to decide what a background process may read in a primary mail and calendar account, and that call belongs to the account owner.
  • exposure The same agent that sits in the inbox has a route to Stripe and Shopify checkout, so an instruction that goes wrong can spend money.
  • cost With token access free and Meta's revenue a fee on transactions, there is no subscription line for a budget owner to approve or cancel; the spend surfaces on card statements.
  • constraint "Soon" and "the coming months" leave the timing open, so anyone who wants to test the glasses or the agent mailbox on a fixed schedule cannot plan one yet.

This gets decided at the permission prompt. Someone picks a mail account, clicks approve, and from then on the thing reading that inbox is a background process. Meta says Muse works in the background and checks back in when it is done [11].

The demo time went to the avatar. Muse users will soon be able to create a digital avatar for their agent and video chat with it in real time, powered by a new model called Muse Realtime Avatar, and Zuckerberg said the physical avatar is named Jolly [13]. On the glasses, a wake word summons Muse to guide a personalized workout or log a meal, and also to book an appointment and help buy a product the wearer is looking at [10]. Meta put the glasses timing at "the coming months" [12].

The Mac feature is the one with an actual job attached. Meta is bringing Muse computer work to the desktop, where the agent will be able to operate any app [7]. "You can walk away from your computer and it keeps working for you on all the jobs you lined up," Wang said during the keynote [8]. He also said Muse can "help you run your small business, or just get work done for you" [9]. So the buyer here is someone who owns their own accounts.

One keynote, and Muse comes away with an email address that users can add to a thread or forward mail to [5][6], desktop control on a Mac [7], the glasses [10], and the live avatar session [13]. That is four surfaces [17], and each needs its own answer about what Muse may read and what it may send on your behalf.

The money runs through the same connections. "We're standing behind this by making Muse free for a huge number of tokens, with the expectation that over time we will profit by taking a small fee from transactions," Zuckerberg said [4]. Meta has partnerships with Stripe and Shopify [14]. The agent reading the mail can also reach those checkouts.

TechCrunch's account of the keynote is silent on per-connector permission controls. Until Meta publishes them, two axes sort the pilot: read or write, attended or unattended. Calendar read, attended, is cheap to try and easy to undo. Mail send, unattended, with a payment path behind it, is the corner where one bad instruction costs real money, and it is also the corner Meta is pitching. The available middle is the forwarding path: give Muse its own address and forward only the threads you want handled [6]. That trade costs the always-on triage that is the whole pitch, and it keeps the ability on Friday to say exactly which messages it saw.

What to watch

  • Whether Meta publishes per-connector permission scopes, or any admin control, before the Muse email address ships.
  • A firm ship date for the glasses wake-word feature, currently described only as "the coming months".
  • How the transaction fee is disclosed when Muse buys something through a Shopify or Stripe checkout on a user's behalf.
