Discord guesses most users' ages from their server list and account age

Why it matters

Open User Settings, pick Account Status, and you may find yourself labelled Unconfirmed. Discord applies that label when its model cannot decide, and it carries most of the restrictions applied to a 13-year-old's account [7][22]. Messages from people who are not friends go to a Message Requests inbox. Sensitive images can be blurred or blocked, and age-restricted servers, channels and bot commands are closed [20].
The model looks at the account itself. Which communities, servers and games it is connected to, how many channels or servers the user is active in, and how long it has existed [4]. Discord says messages, calls and other content are not inputs, and that no single server, community or friend decides the outcome [5][6].
Discord expects more than 90% of users will never be asked to confirm anything [8][9]. The ask is held back for people who are not classified as adults and want age-restricted content, spaces or settings [18].
For that minority there are seven routes, and they cost users different things [13]. Card verification sends details through k-ID to Stripe; Discord says neither it nor k-ID sees the card, and Stripe may place a small temporary charge that is refunded within 14 business days [14]. The Apple App Store and Google Play options pass an age range without the birthdate [15]. Google Wallet works off an existing passport-based ID pass, which currently covers passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US [16]. AgeKey issues a reusable credential for other supported services [17]. The remaining two are a video selfie and an ID scan [12].
Discord acknowledged the model will not always get it right, and the fix for a wrong guess is the same manual confirmation a teen would use to prove adulthood [10]. The cost of an error lands on the person misread. An adult who was in age-restricted channels last week produces an ID scan, or lets Stripe test a card, to get back in.
Global expansion was announced in February and then delayed to the second half of 2026, with Discord saying the extra months would go to more verification options, more transparency about its vendors, and published technical detail [2][3]. Dexerto's report does not name a law or regulator behind the timing, and it compares the approach to Google and YouTube's age estimation [24][25].
If you are building a gate of your own, the questions are how confident your inference is and what a wrong answer costs the person on the other side. Discord's low-confidence guesses cost the user access, and the user pays for the correction. The option most teams skip is to leave low-confidence cases alone: hold back the restriction and carry the risk yourself. Discord took it in one place: full profile and activity information for Unconfirmed users can stay visible to friends, while teen accounts have profile details and activity, including the game they are playing, limited to friends and people in smaller shared servers [23][21].
