Supervising agents now takes up to a third of the week in individual contributor roles
Business Insider has practitioners spending a fifth to a third of their working week supervising AI agents, work that looks like first-line management inside roles whose titles and pay bands have not moved with it.

What happened
- Salesforce unveiled "job-ready agents" this month for sales, customer service, e-commerce and internal operations, with tools for employees to teach the agents about their companies and coordinate them.
- Wipro has increased productivity through AI by the equivalent of 20,000 workers, according to its chief technology officer, Sandhya Arun.
- At Daytona, a 30-person AI startup, each of the 16 engineers manages an average of five AI agents, and chief executive Ivan Burazin says nobody at the company writes code anymore.
- Mari Nnanna, a freelance technical writer and backend developer, puts agent management at 20% to 30% of her working time, and product marketing consultant Patricia Diaz-Hymes estimates about 30%.
- Sinda Khenine, a software and AI engineer at Electrolux, now picks models, supplies context, sets boundaries and reviews what her agents produce instead of writing most of the code herself.

Why it matters
- constraint Delivery plans that book the throughput gain from agents without booking the oversight day are overbooked, and the overrun comes out of the same individual's week.
- decision Every employer buying an agent platform now picks which level owns the setup, review and rerun cycle, and whether that changes a job description or stays informal.
- exposure Responsibility for what ships is landing on the person reviewing the pipeline, an individual contributor with review duties and no supervisory authority.
- contradiction The practitioners do not agree the work is owed anything: Khenine treats it as part of software engineering and says no raise is due, while Nnanna would rather stay an individual contributor and cannot avoid the supervision.
Five agents each across 16 engineers is about 80 agent instances under supervision inside a 30-person company [6]. The people doing it hold engineering titles. Business Insider describes what that supervision involves: setting expectations, delegating assignments, evaluating performance, demanding revisions and intervening when things go wrong [19]. The publication wrote: "You just won't be receiving the title or the raise" [26].
The hours are the part a capacity plan can use. At the rates the two independent practitioners report, coordination takes one day to a day and a half out of a five-day week [23]. "It's suddenly becoming a skill you need to have," Nnanna said [9]. Diaz-Hymes gives her agents names and keeps their configurations [13], and she said, "It does feel like management" [12].
Khenine manages both kinds of report. She leads a human team at Electrolux and says agents can be more complicated to manage than people, because they need a lot of setup and the oversight does not stop once they begin working [18]. "It's like a loop," she said. "You need to monitor the results. You need to see the progress. You need to decide if you need to rerun or finish the job" [16]. The effort, she said, "is more focused on the coordination itself rather than the engineering problem that we are solving in the first place" [15]. Agents also let her build her own AI business by herself, something she said would have been "10 times harder" in the past [22].
The pay question is where the record runs out, and the reason is who is quoted. Two of the three practitioners are independent: a freelance technical writer and backend developer, and a product marketing consultant [24]. Neither has an employer that sets a title or a band. Business Insider does not report a company that has changed either one for agent supervision [25]. On the buying side, Wipro's chief technology officer, Sandhya Arun, said she envisions "the same engineer managing a bunch of agents" [3].
The group with the most at stake in leaving this undefined picked the individual contributor path on purpose. Business Insider reports that engineers who pursued principal or staff roles because those offered career advancement without becoming a supervisor are finding themselves de facto managers of machines anyway [21]. Buying the agent platform is this quarter's decision. Which level owns the loop, and how many hours of the week it gets, is next quarter's.
What to watch
- Whether any employer publishes an agents-per-engineer span of control in a job description or leveling rubric.
- Whether Wipro's claimed 20,000-worker productivity equivalent turns into headcount decisions or redefined engineering roles.
- Whether agent platforms start reporting the oversight hours their consoles consume, which would give capacity planners a number to book.
