Anthropic folds Cowork's agentic work into every Claude conversation
Anthropic's support note says the mode picker goes away in a staged rollout, and accounts that move over cannot return to separate Chat and Cowork options. Connected apps stay live while a task runs.

What happened
- Anthropic is merging Claude Cowork and chat into a single conversation, so the user no longer picks a mode and Claude decides which tool to use for a given request.
- Work that was previously confined to Cowork, including research, spreadsheets and presentations handed back as editable files, is now available from any conversation.

Why it matters
- constraint The migration runs one way, so a team that finds the merged defaults hard to review cannot put the per-task mode choice back while it works out a policy.
- exposure Connector approvals granted for interactive chat now apply during unattended cloud tasks, extending the reach of a Gmail or Drive connection into work nobody is watching.
- decision Whoever owns tooling has to decide whether to inventory which seats have moved, because plan level alone no longer tells you what a given seat's default behaviour is.
Cowork was a mode, and a mode is a decision point. A person picked it. That pick was the moment someone decided a piece of work would be handed to an agent that searches the web, reads files, runs code and assembles the result [9]. The merged experience has no mode to choose. Anthropic's support article says: "Ask Claude for what you need, and it can decide which tool to use." [2]
What comes back is files. Claude produces documents, spreadsheets with working formulas and presentations that open in PowerPoint [17], and Claude Design, Claude Slides and Claude Docs are in beta on paid plans [18].
On paper the permission list is unchanged. Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Slack were connected by the user before any of this. Anthropic says those apps keep working while Claude carries out a task, pulling what it needs as it goes [12]. More involved tasks continue in the cloud after the laptop is closed [10], and a task can be set to run on a schedule, such as an inbox summary every Monday morning [19].
In the board-deck version, this is an interface simplification and no new access was granted. The permissions list is unchanged, but the picker was part of the control: it asked a person, per task, whether this one should be agentic. The rollout is staged and needs no action from the user, so accounts on the same plan cross over at different times [5]. Pro and Max users who still see "Chat" and "Cowork" in the message box have not crossed yet [6]. An account that has crossed cannot go back to the separate options [8].
The remaining boundary sits in software on the endpoint. Folder access on the desktop, the built-in browser, and computer use each work only while Claude Desktop is open, which is three of the machine-level capabilities the article lists [13][14][15][20]. By default Claude asks before permanently deleting any files [16]. Computer use is in beta on Pro and Max plans [15]. The article's plan references are to Pro, Max and paid plans, and it does not describe an administrator control over the rollout [21].
So anyone who owns tooling has a narrow question this quarter. It is whether Claude Desktop is installed on company machines and which connectors are live in each seat, because those two facts now decide whether a seat can read, create and organise files without a person watching [11][13][12].
Next quarter's version of this question is harder. Chats, tasks, projects and settings carry over on migration [7]. By the time a team notices that finished spreadsheets and decks are arriving from scheduled cloud tasks, the history that produced them is already inside the merged product, and the old two-button state is gone [8].
What to watch
- Whether Team and Enterprise plans get an administrator toggle for the merged experience or the same automatic staged rollout described for Pro and Max.
- Whether the default confirmation before permanent file deletion becomes configurable at organisation level.
- Whether Anthropic adds any rollback for accounts that have already lost the separate Chat and Cowork options.
