Bentley prices its first EV $10,000 above the Range Rover Autobiography it is chasing

The Torcal claims up to 375 miles on WLTP and a 16-minute charge at 400 kilowatts. Bentley is selling it at $218,000 into a market where Lamborghini shelved its electric GT and Rolls-Royce Spectre sales fell by almost half.

What happened

  • Bentley uncovered the Torcal, its first fully electric car, which becomes a fourth model line beside the Continental GT, the Flying Spur and the Bentayga.
  • Bentley quotes up to 375 miles of range on the WLTP cycle, which Wired estimates at around 330 miles on the EPA cycle.
  • The sporting S models make 888 PS and 1,350 Nm from a motor on each axle, reaching 60 mph in as little as 2.9 seconds and topping out at 162 mph.
  • Prices start at $218,000, or 173,300 pounds, and run to $258,200 for the First Edition S.
  • Wired reports Lamborghini has shelved its Lanzador electric GT, Mercedes-Benz sold 1,450 electric G Wagens in Europe through April 2025, and Spectre sales are down nearly half.

Why it matters

  • decision At the top of the electric SUV market the comparison has become a $10,000 step inside a single budget, which puts Bentley in direct competition with a JLR trim level rather than with other new EVs.
  • constraint The 16-minute number depends on 400-kilowatt hardware being present, so an owner whose regular stops top out lower is buying a slower car than the launch material describes.
  • exposure Bentley is putting an electric flagship in front of the same buyer pool whose appetite Lamborghini's CEO described as heading to almost zero.
  • cost A US buyer at $218,000 is paying for a car Wired expects to rate around 330 miles, 12 percent under the headline WLTP figure the marketing carries.

A customer walking a luxury SUV lot with $220,000 to spend is now choosing between two electric cars at nearly the same money. The Range Rover Electric Autobiography is $208,000 [10]. The Torcal starts at $218,000, or 173,300 pounds [8], so the step up to the Bentley badge and the Bentley interior costs $10,000 [1]. Against the entry Range Rover Electric at $138,000, which Wired says has a similar range, the Torcal asks 58 percent more [9][2].

The capability questions are answered on paper. Wired reported in July that the car would do more than 300 miles [3]; Bentley published up to 375 on WLTP, and Wired puts the likely EPA figure at about 330, roughly 12 percent lower [4][3].

The charging headline is a charger-side number. Ten to 80 percent in 16 minutes at 400 kilowatts [5] moves about 107 kilowatt-hours if the car holds the full 400 kilowatts for the whole session, which makes the usable pack no bigger than about 152 kilowatt-hours [4]. The 16 minutes requires a 400-kilowatt charger.

The peer record shows buyers declining to buy. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said demand among its buyers was "going almost to zero, if not to zero" [12]. Rolls-Royce is hoping a model refresh turns Spectre sales around [14]. Wired did not report why those buyers stayed away.

Bentley's response is aimed squarely at the badge. "The Torcal is a Bentley first and foremost," the launch literature says, calling the car "a template for future Bentleys, regardless of powertrain" [15]. Walliser said he believes "this is one of the best Bentleys ever" [2].

For anyone taking a new platform to an existing premium customer base, the split worth making is between a capability objection and an identity objection. A capability objection is answered with a number, and Bentley has the numbers: 375 miles, and 60 mph in as little as 2.9 seconds in the S [6]. An identity objection is answered by whether the thing still feels like what the customer bought last time. Bentley has spent there too. The radiator grille is gone and in its place is a solid wall of illuminated acrylic crystals that light up as you approach [17]. Fox Brothers engineered a wool tough enough to panel part of the cabin, which Bentley calls a world first, and a new wood finish is pressed from 1,000 layers of walnut off-cuts and recycled paper [19]. Inside there are OLED screens and physical switchgear, a centre display that curves downward, and deliberately no separate passenger screen option [18]. If the buyers you lost went out on the identity axis, another 40 miles of range and two tenths off the 0 to 60 will not bring them back.

What to watch

  • An official EPA range rating for the Torcal, measured against Wired's estimate of about 330 miles.
  • Whether Rolls-Royce's Spectre refresh reverses the sales decline Wired reports.
  • Whether Bentley publishes Torcal order or delivery numbers at a level buyers can compare with the electric G Wagen.
